Interessante a sapersi, vero?
Glaciation.
The images in this post were taken by a small lake not far from my home in November 2018. As temperatures drop below zero and stay for some time, all lakes, large or small, start freezing. It does not take long: the process is quite fast, especially for fresh water, depending of course on how much below zero air is; the first part to freeze is the middle of the lake and the last one is the water close to the banks.
A fun fact: when the layer of ice is 5 cm thick, it can bear the weight of a person; in case it is 10 cm it can bear a car!
If plenty of snow falls upon the icy surface, the freezing process slows down or stops, as snow has an insulating effect! Interesting how nature works, isn’t it?

Fun and interesting facts. I never knew ice from from the middle of a lake or pond first. I would have guessed just the opposite!

Nature really is quite interesting! I knew that the snowfall at night damped noise so it is quieter but I didn’t know it stopped freezing water!
