Tra Italia e Finlandia

Una delle tappe cui tenevo di piu’ durante il nostro recente viaggio in Lapponia e’ stata questa cittadina nell’est Finlandia:  Kuhmo.

Perche’?  E’ presto detto:  perche’ nel 2018 a Mantova ho assistito ad un concerto di musica da camera di una ensemble di musicisti finlandesi che veniva proprio da Kuhmo;  perche’ anche a Kuhmo,  come a Mantova,  si tiene ogni anno un festival di musica da camera;  perche’ a Kuhmo la musica viene studiata parecchio e perche’ ho una discreta passione per la musica classica,  specie se suonata dal vivo.

Ultimo ma non meno importante,  mi piace anche ammirare l’architettura contemporanea e il Kuhmo Arts Centre e’ un edificio elegante.

Veramente si chiama:  Kuhmo-Talo,  cioe:  la Casa di Kuhmo,  perche’ ospita eventi non solo musicali,  ma anche di danza,  teatro,  convegni…insomma uno spazio versatile al servizio della cittadinanza.  Inaugurato nel 1993,  questo edificio di quasi 30mila metri cubi e’ opera dell’architetto Matti Heikkinen e dell’esperto di acustica Alpo Halme.

Purtroppo nel giorno in cui siamo arrivati noi c’era un piccolo focolaio di Covid proprio a Kuhmo e tutto era chiuso,  ma e’ stato comunque piacevole visitare questa ridente cittadina che si affaccia su un enorme lago e offre anche vedute naturalistiche.

From Mantua to Kuhmo.

On our way to Lapland I really wanted to visit Kuhmo,  a lovely small town in east Finland. 

Here’s why:  because in 2018 in Mantua (quite close to Verona) I had the pleasure to listen to a chamber music ensemble from Kuhmo;  because in Kuhmo as well as in Mantua a Chamber Music Festival takes place every summer;  because quite they study and play music in Kuhmo and because I cherish also classical music,  especially live.

Last but not least,  because I like to admire contemporary architecture and the Kuhmo Arts Centre is quite stately.  The name of this awesome building is actually:  Kuhmo-Talo,  that is:  Kuhmo-House,  as it is a multipurpose space open to citizens. Inaugurated in 1993,  the Kuhmo-Talo has been hosting many types of events:  music but also theatre,  dance,  meetings…  Its capacity is approximately 30,000 cubic metres.  Designed by architect Matti Heikkinen it boasts perfect acoustics,  perfected by architect Alpo Halme.

Unfortunately when we were there a small Covid cluster had just been found in Kuhmo,  so every place was closed.  We had anyway the delight to spend an hour in this lovely town overlooking a big lake,  which offers lovely nature views too.
