Tra Italia e Finlandia

Come ho detto in precendenza,  a primavera gli uccelli cantano per trovare compagnia,  costruire un nido col partner e procreare.  Quello che vi racconto oggi è che possiamo aiutarli in questo senso,  fornendo loro degli spazi protetti dove costruire il nido,  ad esempio queste casette di legno col buco.

Queste casette si possono mettere in giardino,  possibilmente un po’ distanti l’una dall’altra,  appese a qualche albero.  Si comprano nei negozi di animali,  o in qualche mercato,  ma si possono anche fabbricare da se’,  per chi e’ portato per lavorare il legno.  Gli uccellini le troveranno sicuramente,  specie quelli che sono nati nel vostro giardino l’anno prima! Loro si ricordano esattamente il posto e sanno tornarvi;  perfino i migratori!  Prenderanno possesso della loro casetta e vi fabbricheranno il nido,  portando pagliuzze e rametti.  In questo post parliamo di uccellini di piccola taglia:  cinciallegre,  cinciarelle,  luì…e soprattutto di uccellini cui piace stare nelle casette,  perchè molti fanno il nido in posti più aperti o per terra,  fra le stoppie…

Ci sono pero’ regole ferree da seguire per agevolare gli uccellini e la loro salute:  per esempio,  la casetta deve avere una certa altezza,  col buco in alto,  in modo che il nido venga costruito sul fondo,  per evitare che qualche predatore (gatto,  scoiattolo) possa infilare una zampa nel buco e razziare le uova!

Secondo:  il buco deve essere di una misura tale che consenta l’entrata e l’uscita di un solo specifico tipo di uccellino.  Se e’ troppo grande,  riecco che facciamo il gioco dei predatori!

Terzo:  ogni primavera,  prima della stagione dell’accoppiamento,  le casette vanno svuotate dei rimasugli di nido dell’anno precedente,  in modo che il nuovo nido non venga costruito sugli eventuali parassiti rimasti.

Quarto:  attorno al buco andrebbe messo un rinforzo in metallo,  come vedete nelle foto,  in modo che per esempio il picchio non possa spaccare il legno,  allargare il buco e papparsi le uova!  (Anche a lui piacerebbero le uova di cinciallegra…)

Infine:  le casette non occorre verniciarle:  meglio se sono di legno naturale.

Forse avro’ dimenticato qualcosa…ma ve lo raccontero’ in qualche altro post.  Vi lascio con due foto di una Balia Nera,  Kirjosieppo  (Ficedula hypoleuca)  nel nostro giardino,  affacciata alla vecchia casetta fabbricata da mio suocero qualche primavera fa.

Condo for little birds.     

It is so nice in springtime when birds sing happily to find company,  make a nest and breed.  What I would like to tell you today is that we can help them in this function,  by giving them protected spaces where to make their nests:  for instance these wooden houses with a hole.

You can buy these birds’ houses in pet shops,  markets or build them yourself,  if you are fond of woodworking.  You must hang them onto trees in your garden,  possibly far from each other:  birds will surely find them,  especially those who were born in your same garden the year before!  Even migrating birds will find them on their return from the south!  They will take possession of one house and build their nest in it,  carrying branches and straw.  In this post we will talk about small birds (tits,  chaffinches,  warblers),  who like to stay in these houses:  many others prefer a more open site for their nest.

If you like to build a birds’ house youself,  you must follow strict rules for the welfare of the birds themselves:  for instance the dimensions of the house;  the hole must be placed high so that the nest is built at the bottom of the box to prevent predators (cats, squirrels…) to insert a paw into the hole and destroy the nest or the eggs!

Secondly:  the hole must be small enough to allow only one type of bird in;  if it is too large,  bigger birds or predators may get in!

Thirdly:  every spring,  before migratory birds come back,  you must clean the inside of the houses,  so that the new nest can be built in a clean area without parasites.

Fourth:  it is important also to place a metal reinforcement around the hole,  so that the woodpecker for instance cannot hammer the wood,  make the hole larger and destroy the eggs!  (Woody likes tits’ eggs!)

Finally:  it is improper to paint birds’ houses,  better to build them in natural wood.

I am quite sure I have forgotten something,  but I will write other posts about this subject in the future.  In the last two photos:  a European Pied Flycatcher,  Kirjosieppo in Finnish  (Ficedula hypoleuca)  enjoying its house in our garden;  the house was built by my father-in-law a few springs ago.
