Sledge with Sidecar.

In the snowy Finnish winter wonderland we can move using a traditional and practical kick sledge,  which is a sort of kick scooter,  with blades,  handlebars,  reflector and a seat!  Adults as well as children use it,  not only for fun.

It works very simply:  you just kick it by one leg,  while the other rests on the blades,  you drive it by the handlebars and you can carry a passenger or a shopping bag on the seat.  The advantage is that it works not only downhill,  but everywhere.  For Finnish children it is fun,  but you can actually use it to go to places,  especially if you live in the countryside.  Of course it works on secondary and sandy roads,  which are snow-free but never completely clean:  bigger roads and city streets are too clean and treated with salt.  It is anyway allowed everywhere:  it is subject to pedestrians’ rules.

In my last shots you can have an idea of its price and of its usage:  this unaware and unsuspecting gentleman is my model for today.

  1. Nostalgic! I had a red kick sledge when I was a child. Sadly, there weren’t so many winters to use it, because in my home town Turku snowy winters were quite rare.
Nowadays my back immediately starts to ache, when I just see this kind of sledge. That crouched position would be murder to my aching back!
But quite a cheap vehicle! Did you buy one?

  2. You are well prepared for getting about in the snow with much help from authorities to clear and/or grit the icy roads and from sledges of all types. We stay indoors as snow and ice is a hazard for us, the elderly.

  3. Ciao Lucy! Rieccoti nello spam, accidenti. E qualche giretto l’abbiamo fatto, eccome! 😉

  4. Nostalgic, nostalgic… We went to school using one. 🙂
Some comments made me think that I too would prefer to have my back straight when using a kick sledge. (Nowadays we can’t; the roads here are heavily treated with salt.) Perhaps the gentleman in your photo should have a higher sledge. 🙂
A gorgeous post, Luisella! Have a great week ahead! xx

  5. Sorry we had no electricity for almost 2 days, so no computer access:( Almost any time we have snow, the electricity goes off having to do with the lines in the trees (here in the USA the power lines are not in the ground like in Europe!)
This kick scooter looks like a lot of fun, and practical when having groceries. The “walk” home in the snow probably goes a lot faster! Thank you for giving a description of how to use it for the All Season-ers! Have a great rest of the week!

  6. What a wonderful invention (I am sure it has been around for 100s of years, but I mean in general …) I especially like that it has a seat with it – either for someone else or for the kicker to take a rest! Love it!
