Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Aprile e’ stato decisamente freddino.  Dopo un gradevole inizio con sole e bel tempo,  ci sono stati vari colpi di coda dell’inverno che hanno portato neve e temperature appena sottozero.  In particolare la nevicata del 23 aprile ha portato disagi in quanto sono caduti anche 28cm di neve in alcune localita’ nel sud del Paese,  dove le attrezzature invernali erano gia’ state riposte.

Gli esperti ci hanno detto (sui giornali finlandesi la Natura ha molto spazio) che persino alcuni stormi di uccelli migratori appena giunti,  sono tornati leggermente indietro – ad esempio nel sud della Svezia – sfruttando le correnti aeree provenienti da nord,  per cercare di sopravvivere.  Chi non lo ha fatto,  comunque e’ rimasto qui nel sud Finlandia per un po’ e non ha proseguito immediatamente il viaggio verso l’estremo nord.

Questo ci ha dato l’opportunita’ di osservare qualche volatile piu’ raro,  ad esempio la Peppola,  che si e’ fermato alle nostre mangiatoie per qualche giorno.

Comunque fra una nevicata e l’altra,  abbiamo ripreso la stagione ciclistica e abbiamo ripreso anche a stendere il bucato all’aperto,  cosa che faremo per tutta estate fino ad ottobre.  Il bucato steso fuori ha un profumo unico e piacevole.

Fra una nevicata e l’altra abbiamo ripreso anche a mettere ordine in giardino,  dopo che il grosso della neve invrnale si e’ sciolto tutto.  Bisogna rastrellare,  potare la siepe,  raccogliere i detriti accumulati,  come i piccoli rami che i pini e le betulle lasciano cadere.

Rastrellare l’erba del giardino e risvegliarla e’ un lavoro piacevole,  quasi zen,  secondo me molto vicino alla meditazione.  Specialmente se tutt’intorno gli uccellini intonano i loro cori polifonici.  Di tanto in tanto magari si sente un richiamo squillante che si alza al di sopra di tutti i rumori e allora si interrompe il lavoro e si alza la testa,  per ammirare uno stormo di oche selvatiche che in formazione perfetta viaggiano verso nord.

Anche in Italia Aprile ha mostrato un regresso all’inverno verso meta’ mese,  dopo aver toccato picchi di caldo inusuali per la stagione.

Notizie spicciole del mese:  la nazionale di calcio femminile finlandese ha vinto per 2-1 una partita contro la nazionale italiana,  valida per le qualificazioni ai prossimi campionati Europei.  Abbiamo seguito parte del secondo tempo e in effetti abbiamo visto che le giocatrici finlandesi si sono espresse al meglio.

La Finlandia ha “festeggiato” un anno dalla propria entrata nella NATO.  Ricordo a chiunque mi legge che questa scelta e’ stata fatta con ponderazione e che i finlandesi sono gente pacifica – qui nessuno tifa per la guerra – ma l’aggressivita’ della Russia ha spaventato l’opinione pubblica ed ha indotto a rompere la storica neutralita’.   L’appoggio della Finlandia all’ Ucraina e’ senza riserve,  come lo e’ l’appoggio di tutti i Paesi Baltici e Scandinavi.

Febbraio 2024 e’ stato il piu’ caldo da quando sono iniziate storicamente le misurazioni della temperatura a livello mondiale.

La Lepre artica,  o Lepre Variabile,  quella che d’inverno cambia la pelliccia rossiccia in una completamente bianca,  sta sparendo a gran velocita’ dalla Finlandia meridionale.  Il motivo e’ il cambiamento climatico:  meno presenza di neve stabile non permette a questo animale di mimetizzarsi nell’ambiente e deve spostarsi verso nord.

Di tutti i 660.000 abitanti di Helsinki censiti a fine 2022,  solo 260.000 erano nativi di Helsinki e 110.000 erano expat.

Ultima cosa ma non meno importante:  ultimamente sembra proprio che il governo italiano stia cercando di moderare la liberta’ di espressione nella tv di stato,  attraverso pressioni sui giornalisti e non solo.  E’ di pochi giorni fa la notizia di una incredibile censura che ha rivelato tanti altri casi anche preesistenti.   Sono in programma vari scioperi per tentare di arginare questo fenomeno.  Ecco:  quando leggiamo che la Finlandia e’ fra i Paesi piu’ felici al mondo,  ricordiamo che la liberta’ di espressione,  sempre garantita,  e’ uno dei motivi.

A Month in my Photos.

April was decidedly cold.  After a pleasant start with sun and good weather,  there were various tailwinds of winter that brought snow and temperatures just below zero.  The snowfall on April 23rd brought particular nconvenience as 28cm of snow fell in some places in the south of the country,  where winter equipments had already been stored

Experts told us (Nature has a lot of space in Finnish newspapers) that even some flocks of migratory birds that had just arrived have turned back slightly – for example to southern Sweden – taking advantage of the air currents coming from the north,  to try to survive.  Those who didn’t,  however,  stayed here in southern Finland for a while and did not immediately continue their journey to the far north.

This gave us the opportunity to observe some rarer birds,  for example the Bramblings,  which stopped at our feeders for a few days.

Between one snowfall and another,  we resumed the cycling season and also resumed hanging out the laundry outside,  which we will do throughout the summer until October.  Laundry hanging outside has a unique and pleasant scent.

Between one snowfall and another we also started tidying up the garden again,  after the bulk of the winter snow had all melted.  Now it is time to rake,  prune the spruce fence,  collect the  debris such as the small branches that pine and birch trees drop.

Raking the grass in the garden and waking it up is a pleasant job,  almost zen:  in my opinion very close to meditation.  Especially if the birds all around are singing their polyphonic choruses.  Every now and then you may hear a loud call that rises above all the noise and you stop your work and raise your head to admire a flock of wild geese travelling in perfect formation towards the far north.

Even in Italy,  April showed a regression to winter towards the middle of the month,  after having reached heat peaks unusual for the season.

Small news of the month:  the Finnish women’s national football team won a match against the Italian national team 2-1.  The match was a European qualifier.  We followed part of the second half and we saw that the Finnish players expressed themselves at their best.

Finland “celebrated” one year since joining NATO.  I remind anyone who reads me that this choice was made with consideration and that the Finns are peaceful people – no one is rooting for war here – but Russia’s aggressiveness has frightened public opinion and has led to breaking the historic neutrality.  Finland’s support for Ukraine is unreserved,  as is the support of all the Baltic and Scandinavian countries.  Also because Russia has intensified cyber attacks on the GPS of planes flying over the Baltic area,  threatening general security.  In the above  graph the situation in 2024,  with significantly increasing attacks: on the left the Finnish flights,  on the right the international ones.

February 2024 was the warmest month since global temperature measurements began in history.

The Arctic Hare,  or Polar Rabbit,  the one that changes its reddish fur to completely white in winter,  is disappearing at great speed from southern Finland.  The reason is climate change:  the less amount of stable snow does not allow this animal to camouflage itself in the environment and it must move north.

Of all 660,000 Helsinki residents surveyed at the end of 2022,  only 260,000 were native Helsinkians and 110,000 were expats.

In the final graph here above:  wind energy production in Finland has grown steadily in recent years.

Last but not least:  lately the Italian government seems to be trying to reduce freedom of expression on state TV,  through pressure on journalists and other things.  A few days ago there was news of an incredible censorship which revealed many other cases,  including pre-existing ones.  Journalists have programmed various strikes to protest against this.   When we read that Finland is among the happiest countries in the world,  let’s remember that freedom of expression,  always guaranteed,  is one of the reasons.
