Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Marzo e’ stato piuttosto freddo qui al nord e ha portato anora qualche nevicata,  ma anche qualche pioggia.  Tutto sommato,  il deposito di neve a terra si e’ di molto ridotto ma ce n’e’ ancora da sciogliere.  Questo stato di cose non e’ strano,  ne’ nuovo,  per noi:  ci sono annate in cui si scia fino a fine marzo e a maggio c’e’ ancora qualche cumulo bianco in fondo al giardino ed annate in cui a febbraio i prati esposti a sud sono gia’ verdi.  Questo inverno e’ stato lungo.  Comunque il 1 aprile,  Pasquetta,  c’e’ stato un bel sole e abbiamo fatto il picnic.

In Italia marzo e’ stato molto variabile,  con temperature record di 21 gradi a Verona,  ma anche rovesci intensi di pioggia e neve in montagna.

La buona notizia e’ che la Finlandia si situa fra i primi sette Paesi al mondo che vantano la migliore qualita’ dell’aria,  con percentuali medie di PM 2,5 inferiore o uguale a 5 µg/m3,  insieme con Australia, Estonia, Grenada, Islanda, Mauritius e Nuova Zelanda.  (Fonte:  la Repubblica.

Un’altra buona notizia che qui viene valutata ma che in altri Paesi magari non si nota e’ il ritorno degli uccelli migratori.  Proprio il 20 marzo,  giorno dell’equinozio,  ho visto la prima coppia di cigni e poi a seguire le allodole,  fino al piccolo stormo di fringuelli che il giorno 28 ci siamo ritrovati in giardino.  Se e’ vero il detto che vi proposi qualche anno fa,  significa che la primavera e’ alle porte:  https://traitaliaefinlandia.com/2017/04/03/il-senso-dei-finnici-per-lestate/

Fra i nuovi arrivati si fanno notare i merli,  non solo per il piumaggio che non lascia dubbi,  ma anche per il fatto che cantano benissimo.  Anche di loro certe mattine ce ne troviamo 5-6 in giardino.

Non vi dico i concerti che questi piccoli amici hanno gia’ iniziato:  adesso si tratta di trovare compagnia per nidificare e noi umani siamo allietati dai loro canti.  Il mio vicino mi ha detto che le Cornacchie,  che sono stabili qui,  sono fra i primi a nidificare,  gia’ a inizio marzo.

Non vi sto a raccontare nemmeno le alte grida con cui grandi stormi di Gru o Oche selvatiche  preannunciano il proprio arrivo!  Particolarmente suggestive se udite di notte.

Le giornate si sono allungate vistosamente:  adesso il sole sorge prima delle 7 del mattino e tramonta dopo le 8 di sera,  per cui ceniamo senza bisogno di luce elettrica.

Nonostante i canti degli uccellini,  la situazione sociale in Finlandia e’ ancora tesa e lo sciopero di vari settori di lavoratori prosegue,  poiche’ il governo conservatore ha previsto tanti e tali tagli che ha scontentato gran parte dell’elettorato.  Il motivo del governo e’ diminuire il debito pubblico,  che qui e’ di circa 162 milioni di euro  (quello italiano ammonta a circa 2.800 miliardi).

In Italia invece si sono un po’ placate le proteste degli agricoltori,  alla luce delle promesse di riduzione delle tasse e di retromarce sul Green Deal.  Si tratta pero’ di un’arma a doppio taglio:  contenere l’inquinamento e di conseguenza la crisi climatica e’ conveniente anche per gli agricoltori,  che vedono con sempre maggior frequenza allagamenti/venti di burrasca/siccita’ minacciare/vanificare i raccolti.  Una questione difficile e ancora insoluta.

Ho letto che dal secondo dopoguerra ad oggi il consumo di carne e’ passato,  nei Paesi piu’ voraci,  da 25kg pro-capite annuali a ben 80.  Purtroppo anche gli allevamenti intensivi provocano parecchio inquinamento e i processi agricoli stessi inquinano per il 10% del PIL.  Io stessa pero’ non sono vegetariana e pur non consumando molta carne non mangio tofu o preparazioni vegane.  Mi chiedo solamente cosa si possa fare per non distruggere l’ambiente.

D’altra parte c’e’ gia’ chi provvede a distruggere l’ambiente,  a inquinare a manetta e a diffondere in aria i peggiori gas:  le guerre che si combattono nel mondo e i loro attori che non si preoccupano affatto di cio’ che stanno facendo.  Come corollario alle guerre abbiamo esercitazioni militari di vasta portata in ogni parte del pianeta.  Certo noi umani siamo bravissimi a farci del male,  molto piu’ bravi di qualsiasi altro essere in natura.

Ieri mattina 2 aprile,  ci siamo svegliati con il terribile avvenimento di una sparatoria in una scuola media in cui un adolescente ha ucciso un coetaneo e ne ha feriti gravemente altri due.  La notizia e’ stata quanto piu’ scioccante,  poiche’ qui in Finlandia il crime rate non e’ affatto alto.  Purtroppo pero’ non e’ nemmeno la prima sparatoria in una scuola e puntualmente la societa’ si interroga su quel che puo’ fare di piu’ per i propri ragazzi/giovani.

Termino questo post con una vignetta che la dice lunga sul sentimento che gira qui in Finlandia,  dove la guerra d’Ucraina e’ molto piu’ sentita che in Italia;  raffigura i candidati a  Presidente della Repubblica delle elezioni appena svolte e dice:  “In cerca di un leader per tempi difficili”.

A Month in my Photos.

March was quite cold here in the north and brought some snow again,  but also some rain.  All in all,  the snow deposit on the ground is reduced,  but there is still something.  This situation is nothing peculiar,  nor new,  for us:  there are years in which we can ski until the end of March and in May there are still some white mounds at the bottom of the garden and years in which in February meadows facing south are already green.  This winter has been long.  Anyway on April 1st,  Easter Monday,  it was sunny and warm and we had a picnic.

In Italy March was very changeable,  with record temperatures of 21 degrees Cealsius in Verona,  but also intense rain and snow showers in the mountains.

The good news is that Finland is among the top seven countries in the world that boast the best air quality,  with average percentages of PM 2.5 less than or equal to 5 µg/m3,  together with Australia,  Estonia,  Grenada,  Iceland,  Mauritius and New Zealand. 

Another piece of good news that is valued here but may not be noticed in other countries is the return of migratory birds.  Precisely on March 20th,  the day of the equinox,  I saw the first pair of Swans,  soon followed by Skylarks,  up to the small flock of Chaffinches that we found in the garden on the 28th.  If the saying I proposed to you a few years ago is true,  it means that spring is upon us:    https://traitaliaefinlandia.com/2017/04/03/il-senso-dei-finnici-per-lestate/

Among the new arrivals,  Blackbirds stand out,  not only for their plumage that leaves no doubt,  but also for their beautiful singing.  Some mornings we also find 5-6 of them in the garden.

I won’t tell you about the concerts that these little friends have already started:  now it’s about finding company to nest and we humans are cheered by their songs.  My neighbor told me that Hooded Crows,  which are permanent here,  are among the first to nest,  already in early March.

I won’t even tell you about the loud cries with which large flocks of Cranes or Wild geese announce their arrival!  Particularly evocative if heard at night.

Daylight has gotten noticeably longer:  now sun rises before 7 a.m.  and sets after 8 p.m.,  so we have dinner without the need for electric light.

Despite the birds singing,  the social situation in Finland is still tense and the strike of various sectors of workers continues,  as the conservative government has foreseen so many cuts that it has dissatisfied a large part of the electorate.  The government’s reason is to reduce public debt,  which here is around 162 million euros (the Italian debt amounts to around 2,800 billion).

In Italy the farmers’ protests have calmed down somewhat,  in light of the promises of tax cuts and backing away from the Green Deal.  However,  it is a double-edged sword:  limiting pollution and consequently climate crisis is also convenient for farmers,  who increasingly see floods/gale force winds/droughts threatening/ruining their crops.  A difficult and still unresolved question.

I read somewhere that since Second World War meat consumption has increased,  in the most voracious countries,  from 25kg per capita per year to as many as 80.  Unfortunately,  intensive farming also causes a lot of pollution and the agricultural processes themselves pollute 10% of the GDP.  However,  I myself am not a vegetarian and although I don’t eat much meat I don’t eat tofu or vegan preparations.  I just wonder what can be done to avoid destroying the environment.

On the other hand,  there are already those who destroy the environment,  pollute like crazy and spread the worst gases into the air:  the wars being fought around the world and their actors who don’t care at all about what they are doing.  As a corollary to wars we have large-scale military exercises in every part of the planet.  Of course we humans are very good at harming ourselves,  much better than any other living being in nature.

Yesterday morning,  April 2nd,  we woke up to the terrible event of a shooting in a middle school in which a teenager killed a peer and seriously injured two others.  The news was all the more shocking,  since here in Finland the crime rate is quite low.  Unfortunately,  however,  it is not even the first shooting in a school and public opinion is once again asking itself what more can be done for its children/young people.

I will end this post with a cartoon that says a lot about the feeling that goes around here in Finland,  where the Ukrainian war is much more felt than in Italy;  it depicts the candidates for  President of the Republic in the recently held elections and says:  “Looking for a leader for difficult times”.
