Un buon partito.

DSCN9741

Calling out for company.

This black-and-white guy is the male European pied flycatcher  (Ficedula hypoleuca),  in Finnish:  Kirjosieppo.   He has just arrived from the spring migration and after accurate inspection has taken possession of one of the many nest boxes we set up in our garden.  He is ready to build his nest in there.

All right:  the house is found!

Now he needs a mate.  He knows what to do to attract a female:  he will stand on top of the box singing loud,  claiming that he is a very good party!  As if to say:  I’ve got a place to stay,  so…come girls…come!

Look what a smart guy!…

  3. We have tree swallows nesting. I think both sexes participate in the nest building, egg hatching and feeding their young. At least watching them it appears that both come and go from the nest frequently. – Margy
