Tra Italia e Finlandia

L’ultimo weekend di gennaio ci ha regalato una delle tempeste di neve piu’ pesanti viste da alcuni anni a questa parte.  I meteorologi l’hanno definita “una di quelle tempeste che capitano un paio di volte per decennio”,  addirittura.  Fortunatamente il vento non e’ stato troppo forte,  per cui non abbiamo avuto disastri,  ma la quantita’ di neve e’ stata talmente copiosa che sembrava non si volesse fermare piu’.   E’ stata una di quelle circostanze in cui anche nella efficiente Finlandia alcuni voli sono stati cancellati e le condizioni di alcune strade secondarie invitavano a non mettersi in viaggio.

In queste prime foto:  le mangiatoie per i nostri uccellini prima della spalatura.  (Loro comunque hanno continuato a mangiare indisturbati).

Ha iniziato a nevicare il sabato pomeriggio ed ha smesso definitivamente il lunedi’ mattina.  Per tutto il weekend la neve ha spadroneggiato:  ha attutito i rumori,  ha alleggerito i pensieri,  ha illuminato le notti,  ci ha concesso la possibilita’ di tanto sano movimento…di spalatura.  A fine burrasca abbiamo avuto una quarantina di cm di deposito.  Fortunatamente la temperatura era un po’ al di sotto dello zero, per cui la neve era leggera:  se fosse stata acquosa sarebbe stata pesantissima.

CURIOSITA’:  Questa tempesta e’ stata denominata:  Valtteri,  dal nome che cadeva quel giorno sul calendario.  Tradizionalmente in Finlandia non abbiamo il Santo del giorno sul calendario,  ma si e’ mantenuta l’usanza dai tempi antecedenti l’avvento della religione Luterana,  di annoverare ogni giorno un nome di persona diverso.

A proposito:  certamente tutti conoscete gia’ qualcuno di nome Valtteri:  il pilota finlandese di Formula 1 Valtteri Bottas.  😉

The last weekend of January brought up one of the heaviest snow storms seen in some years now.  Meteorologists have called it “one of those storms that happen a couple of times per decade”,  actually.  Fortunately the wind wasn’t too strong,  so we didn’t have any major damages,  but the amount of snow was so abundant that it seemed it would snow forever.  It was one of those circumstances in which even in efficient Finland some flights were cancelled and the conditions of some secondary roads discouraged anybody willing to travel. 

In the first photos above:  the feeders for our birds before our cleaning.  (The birds kept on getting their seeds all the time).

It started snowing on Saturday afternoon and finally stopped on Monday morning.  Throughout the weekend the snow dominated:  it muffled the noises,  lightened our thoughts,  lit up the nights,  gave us the possibility of so much healthy movement … of shoveling.  At the end of the storm we had about forty cm on the ground.  Fortunately the temperature was a little below zero, so the snow was light:  if it had been watery it would have been very heavy.

A FUN FACT:  this storm was called:  Valtteri,  after the name that fell that day on the calendar.  Traditionally in Finland we do not have the Saint of the day on the calendar,  but the custom of celebrating every day a different name has been maintained since the time before the advent of the Lutheran religion.

Of course you all already know somebody whose name is Valtteri:  Formula 1 Finnish driver Valtteri Bottas. 😉
