Tra Italia e Finlandia

Cari lettori,  oggi vi parlo di un animale molto speciale e di un posto speciale nel quale esso vive.  Si tratta di un tipo unico al mondo di foca:  chiamata Foca dagli anelli o Foca del Saimaa  (Pusa hispida saimensis),  che vive solamente nel grande lago Saimaa,  nella Finlandia dell’est.  Il nome viene evidentemente dai disegni sulla pelliccia.

La storia di questo animale e’ particolare:  rimasta imprigionata nelle acque del grande lago circa 8000 anni fa a seguito dell’innalzamento delle terre dopo l’ultima glaciazione,  questa foca si e’ adattata al nuovo ambiente diventando una delle rarissime foche d’acqua dolce al mondo.

Pur rimanendo costante nei secoli,  la popolazione di queste foche e’ andata diminuendo drammaticamente negli ultimi decenni a causa del cambiamento climatico.   Questi animali infatti hanno bisogno della neve:  di cumuli di neve dentro i quali fanno nascere i piccoli.  Se la neve non e’ stabile,  i piccoli sono esposti ai predatori.  Nel momento piu’ nero si era arrivati a circa 150 individui,  ma ora,  grazie all’aiuto dei volontari e alle restrizioni imposte ai pescatori,  siamo a circa 360 individui.  Resta l’incognita del cambiamento climatico:  se questa foca si estingue dal lago Saimaa,  essa sparisce dalla faccia della terra.

Con la stessa webcam vedete anche un Falco pescatore che sta covando nel nido,  sempre sulle rive del Saimaa.

La foca del Saimaa,  che in finnico si chiama:  Saimaannorppa,  e’ un animale iconico e di cui i finlandesi si preoccupano.  Forse l’avete visto da turisti stampato su magliette e felpe,  fra i souvenirs di peluche nei mercatini,  nei francobolli o monete celebrative.

Saimaa Ringed Seal.

Dear readers,  today I am telling you about a very special animal and a special place where it lives.

It is a unique type of seal in the world,  called the Ringed Seal or  the Saimaa Seal  (Pusa hispida saimensis),  which lives only in the great lake Saimaa,  in eastern Finland.  Its name comes from the patterns on its fur. 

The history of this animal is very special:  it remained imprisoned in the waters of the great lake about 8000 years ago consequent to the uprising of the lands after the last ice age.  This seal has then adapted to the new environment becoming one of the very rare freshwater seals in the world.

While remaining constant over the centuries,  the population of these seals has been decreasing dramatically in recent decades due to climate change.  As a matter of fact,  these animals need snow:  heaps of snow in which they give birth to the little ones.  If the snow isn’t stable,  the puppies are in danger.  In the darkest moment we had reached a population of just about 150 individuals,  but lately,  thanks to the help of volunteers and the restrictions imposed on fishermen,  we have about 360 individuals.  The unknown factor of climate change remains:  if this seal goes extinct from Lake Saimaa,  it disappears from the whole world.

By the same webcam you can see an Osprey hatching in its nest.

In my slideshow:  a boat tour of lake Saimaa,  the largest in Finland:  4,400 square km of water.  The starting point is the beautiful city of Savonlinna.  At the end of the tour,  from Savonlinna market square we can see a small monument to the Ringed seal.

Finally:  the Saimaa seal is an iconic critter and something Finns are concerned about.  You may have already seen its pretty face printed on souvenirs…
