C’e’ un fiore, o meglio un arbusto, non conosciutissimo forse, che fiorisce a gennaio! Proprio adesso che tutta la Natura e’ in posizione di riposo…lui fiorisce! (Qui nel clima di Verona, almeno). E’ il fortissimo Calicanto (Chimonanthus praecox), originario della Cina. La sua caratteristica sono proprio i minuscoli ma numerosissimi fiorellini gialli multipetali, che spuntano in pieno inverno dai rami apparentemente rinsecchiti, molto prima che la pianta butti fuori le belle foglie verdi lanceolate.
Se gli si da’ tempo per crescere, il Calicanto diventa un discreto alberello.
Lui pero’ non si limita ad abbellire i giardini d’inverno: i suoi fiori, non appariscenti, sono talmente profumati che se si porta in casa qualche rametto, ci profuma tutta la stanza! Il profumo gradevole, straordinario e unico dei fiori di Calicanto e’ persistente e duraturo. Al Calicanto sono affezionata perche’ mi ricorda la mia infanzia: la mia mamma lo teneva nel nostro giardino e ancora adesso ogni gennaio accolgo con gioia la fioritura. (Vorrei tanto poterlo tenere anche nel nostro giardino in Finlandia!)
A Flower in the Heart of Winter.
This very strong plant I am sharing with you today blooms in January! Just now when Nature is resting, this flower… is fully blooming. (At least here in the climate of Verona). Its name is Calycanthus, or Chimonanthus, (Chimonanthus praecox), it comes from China and it is actually a bush, which can grow quite tall in time, with disordered branches and long green leaves. Its small, yellow, strongly scented flowers are its major feature; they bloom in the heart of Winter from the apparently dried branches, long before the leaves are out.
Not only the Calycanthus revives the dead garden in the dead season, but it will also scent your rooms, if you carry a few branches into your home! I would like to point out the delicacy, the elegance and the pleasantness of its flowers: their perfume is persistent and unique. Even though they are not so beautiful.
This bush reminds me of my childhood, when my mother used to keep it in our garden and still nowadays I await its blooming every January!
(How I wish I could keep it in Finland too!)

How interesting, never heard of this plant. Looks a bit similar with Forsythis that can be grown in Finland and blooms in the spring.

Yes, they both have yellow flowers. We have the Forsythia too, it blooms in late February-March. But the Calycanthus has such a strong perfume…

Adoro il calicanto ed il suo profumo che per me è divenuto quello del mese di gennaio, come intitolai un vecchio post che a lui dedicai !
Ne abbiamo un cespuglio all’interno del cancello d’ingresso che profuma la strada innanzi al nostro cortile, e devo dire che mi dona una tale gioia vederlo in fiore … e quanto è cresciuto ! Lo sapevi Luisella cara che può raggiungere i 5 metri di altezza se lasciato andare libero?
E’ tra i fiori che più amo in assoluto, non chiede nulla, ma quanto, quanto dona !
