Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Marzo si e’ aperto con una fuga in avanti della primavera:  temperature sopra lo zero fino a 9/10 gradi,  assenza di neve e di precipitazioni,  giornate soleggiate alternate ad altre nebbiose,  ma sempre con lo stesso vento tiepido che arrivava da sud.  Un inizio marzo totalmente in controtendenza,  quando invece stagione vorrebbe che fosse il momento di massimo accumulo della neve e della massima affluenza sulle piste da sci.

Invece il giorno 6 ho salutato con un ampio sorriso la prima Pavoncella e il giorno 7 ho fatto la prima biciclettata.  Non ho ricordi di aver preso in mano la bici prima di aprile…e io sono 30 anni che frequento queste lande.

Dopo il primo assaggio di primavera,  Marzo ci ha ripensato e ci ha regalato di nuovo qualche breve nevicata,  che pero’ si e’ immediatamente annullata a fronte del ritorno del vento tiepido da sud.  Per cui io ho ripreso in mano la mia bicicletta.

In Italia Marzo e’ sempre un mese perturbato e quest’anno non ha fatto eccezione:  piogge fresche alternate a giornate di 20 gradi hanno caratterizzato il periodo.

Adesso le giornate sono gia’ lunghe e col cambio dell’ora diventeranno presto lunghissime.  Adesso il buio non sopraggiunge prima delle 21.00.

Abbiamo avuto qualche episodio di Aurora boreale,  che e’ sempre una bella sorpresa:  il sole e’ molto attivo in questi mesi e finche’ ci restano le poche ore di buio,  riusciamo a godere anche questo spettacolo della natura.  Anche l’eclisse parziale di sole si e’ vista il 29 marzo alle ore 13.30.

Gli uccelli migratori a poco a poco stanno facendo ritorno:  prima quelli che si nutrono di semi e granaglie,  gli uccelli acquatici che devono attendere lo sghiacciamento dei laghi e infine quelli che si nutrono di insetti.  Sono tornati perfino i Colombacci e proprio ieri hanno iniziato il loro tu-tu…

Ovviamente il cambio di stagione si percepisce anche dai canti degli uccelli:  le Cince,  che sono residenti,  hanno iniziato a febbraio,  non appena hanno visto aumentare le ore di luce,  adesso si sono aggiunti molti altri.

Oltre agli uccelli che ritornano,  adesso si rivedono ben altri musetti,  quelli che sono stati in letargo o che comunque sono stati nella loro calda tana a riposare tutto l’inverno,  ad esempio qualche rana e poi davanti alla mia fototrappola sono gia’ passati sia il tasso che il cane-procione.

Fra le notizie del mese,  piu’ o meno serie,  c’e’ senz’altro la novita’ sorprendente che la Svezia sara’ rappresentata al prossimo Eurovision Song Contest da una band finlandese!  Ovviamente i due Paesi sono molto legati e i membri della band KAJ sono finno-svedesi,  cioe’ provengono da quella zona costiera bilingue dove si parla in primis svedese e poi finlandese.  Comunque e’ un fatto quantomeno irrituale,  nella storia della competizione canora.  I KAJ presentano un brano spiritoso che prende in giro la cultura della sauna e si intitola:  “Bara bada bastu”,  che in svedese significa:  “Andiamo a farci una sauna”.

Anche il ritrovamento in Lapponia,  precisamente nei dintorni di Utsjoki,  del cespuglio di ginepro piu’ anziano di sempre e’ stata una notizia,  questo mese,  anche perche’ chi lo ha scovato e’ un’equipe di studiosi dell’Universita’ di Padova.  Il ginepro in questione ha ben 1647 anni!

Fra le notizie piu’ serie invece ricordo la visita di stato del presidente ucraino e signora a Helsinki a meta’ mese.  La Finlandia e’ molto vicina all’Ucraina e da’ il proprio supporto parlando poco e facendo tanto;  per esempio ospita ben 45.000 rifugiati (ricordo sempre che gli abitanti totali della Finlandia sono solo 5 milioni e mezzo,  piu’ o meno come la regione Veneto).

A proposito di Ucraina,  qui si seguono le notizie sui “colloqui di pace” con attesa,  speranza,  ma anche disillusione;  si ha infatti l’impressione che siano piu’ che altro colloqui commerciali:  due potenze che si mettono d’accordo per sfruttare le ricchezze dell’Ucraina senza tenere presente le esigenze della popolazione.   Aggiungo che il capo delegazione americano che ci viene a dire che Putin “non e’ cattivo” ci fa quantomeno alzare un sopracciglio…

Ne consegue che probabilmente la guerra non finira’ in 24 ore,  anzi,  che avremo davvero bisogno di ricominciare a riarmare l’Europa,  visto che parti del nostro continente fanno gola a diversi personaggi.  In questo contesto,  osservo che l’Europa e’ l’unico ente che parla di “difesa”,  gli altri parlano di “annessione,  denazificazione,  invasione,  eliminazione,  cancellazione”.

Altre notizia spicciole:  la popolazione finlandese e’ composta al momento da un quarto di adolescenti,  un decimo di over 65 e un decimo di bambini sotto i 5 anni.

La Finlandia importa carne in primis dalla Germania e in secundis dalla Polonia.

Nel 2023 si sono effettuati ben sette milioni di viaggi tra Helsinki e Tallinn via nave.

Il cavo “Eastlink 2”,  danneggiato dall’ancora di una nave,  pesa 80 kg al metro.

I pipistrelli fanno un solo cucciolo all’anno.

Si produce tre volte piu’ energia sfruttando un kg di idrogeno,  che un kg di benzina.

102.000 sono i russofoni presenti al momento in Finlandia.

La resistenza agli antibiotici sta diventando un problema serio e globale.  In Italia si registrano circa 12.000 morti l’anno per questo motivo.  (Fonte:  ANSA).

A Month in my Photos.

March opened with a spring rush:  temperatures above zero up to 9/10 degrees,  no snow or precipitation,  sunny days alternating with foggy ones,  but always with the same warm wind coming from the south.  A start to March that was totally against the trend,  when instead this  should be the moment of maximum snow accumulation and maximum turnout on the ski slopes.

Instead,  on day 6 I greeted the first Northern lapwing with a big smile and on day 7 I took my first bike ride.  I don’t remember picking up a bike before April…and I’ve been frequenting these lands for 30 years. 

After the first taste of spring,  March changed its mind and gave us some brief snowfalls again,  which however were immediately cancelled out by the return of the warm wind from the south.  So I picked up my bike again. 

In Italy,  March is always a disturbed month and this year was no exception:  fresh rains alternating with days of 20 degrees C characterized the period.  

Now the days are already long and with the time change to summertime they will soon become very long.  Now darkness does not come before 9:00 pm.

We have had some flashes of Northern Lights,  which is always a nice surprise:  the sun is very active in these months and as long as we have a few hours of darkness,  we can also enjoy this spectacle of nature.  The partial solar eclipse was also seen on March 29 at 1:30 pm.

Migratory birds are gradually returning:  first those that feed on seeds and grains,  the aquatic birds that have to wait for the lakes to defrost and finally those that feed on insects.  Even the Wood Pigeons have returned and just yesterday they started their tu-tu… 

Obviously the change of season can also be perceived from the birds’ songs:  the Tits,  which are resident,  started in February,  as soon as they saw the hours of light increase,  now many others have joined.

In addition to the returning birds,  now we see many other faces again,  those that have been hibernating or that have been in their warm dens resting all winter,  for example some frogs and then both the badger and the raccoon dog have already passed in front of my camera trap.

Among the news of the month,  more or less serious, t here is certainly the surprising news that Sweden will be represented at the next Eurovision Song Contest by a Finnish band!  Obviously the two countries are very close to each other and the members of the band KAJ are Finnish-Swedish,  that is,  they come from that bilingual coastal area where Swedish is spoken first and Finnish second.  However,  it is at least an unusual fact in the history of the singing competition.  KAJ present a witty song that makes fun of sauna culture and is called:  “Bara bada bastu”,  which in Swedish means:  “Let’s have a sauna”.

The discovery in Lapland,  precisely in the surroundings of Utsjoki,  of the oldest juniper bush ever was also news this month,  also because the finders are a team of scholars from the Italian University of Padua.  The juniper in question is 1647 years old!

Among the more serious news,  I remember the state visit of the Ukrainian president and his wife to Helsinki in the middle of the month.  Finland is very close to Ukraine and gives its support by speaking little and doing a lot;  for example,  it hosts 45,000 refugees (I always remember that the total inhabitants of Finland are only 5 and a half million, more or less like the Veneto region).

Speaking of Ukraine,  here we follow the news on the “peace talks” with expectation,  hope,  but also disillusionment;  one gets the impression that these are more like trade talks:  two powers that agree to exploit Ukraine’s wealth without taking into account the needs of the population.  I would add that the head of the American delegation who want to tell us that Putin “is not bad” makes us at least raise an eyebrow…

It follows that the war will probably not end in 24 hours,  indeed,  that we will really need to start rearming Europe again,  given that parts of our continent are coveted by various figures.  In this context,  I note that Europe is the only entity that speaks of “defense”,  the others all speak of “annexation,  denazification,  invasion,  elimination,  cancellation”.

More side news:  the Finnish population is currently made up of a quarter of teenagers,  a tenth of over-65s and a tenth of children under 5.

Finland imports meat primarily from Germany and secondly from Poland.

In 2023,  seven million trips were made between Helsinki and Tallinn by ship.

The “Eastlink 2” cable,  damaged by a ship’s anchor,  weighs 80 kg per meter.
