Il Fischione (Anas penelope o Mareca penelope), e’ una bella anatra di medie dimensioni e dai colori discreti che migra verso nord in estate e qui nidifica. D’inverno migra poco piu’ a sud della zona di nidificazione, ad esempio in Gran Bretagna.
Vive nelle zone acquatiche, stagni, paludi, e’ lunga fino a 50cm e la femmina si mimetizza grazie ai piu’ discreti toni marrone del piumaggio. La caratteristica del maschio e’ il suo verso, che e’ un alto fischio.
Il nome in finnico di questa graziosa anatra e’: Haapana.
Li ho fotografati in arrivo nella laguna di Halikon Lahti a primavera.
Gli altri uccelli in primo piano sono Gabbianelli.
Eurasian Wigeons.
The Eurasian Wigeon (Anas penelope or Mareca penelope), is a beautiful medium-sized duck with discreet colours that migrates north in summer and nests here. In winter, it migrates a little further south of the nesting area, for example in Great Britain.
It lives in aquatic areas, ponds, marshes, it is up to 50cm long and the female is well camouflaged thanks to the more discreet brown tones of the plumage. The characteristic of the male is his cry which is a loud whistle.
The Finnish name of this cute critter is: Haapana.
I photographed them arriving in Halikon Lahti lagoon in spring.
The other birds in the foreground are Black-headed Gulls.

The Wigeon is beautiful! They are recorded once every few years on Florida’s east coast. They must really have gotten lost!
