Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Febbraio e’ stato nel complesso piuttosto mite in Finlandia.  Abbiamo avuto temperature sempre a ridosso dello zero e poca neve.   Solo adesso a fine mese un’abbondante nevicata ha consentito di riprendere le ultime sciate.

Grazie alla situazione meteo particolarmente mite,  abbiamo potuto risparmiare parecchio sui costi del riscaldamento e siccome spesso il vento ha fatto girare i nostri impianti eolici,  non abbiamo mai avuto problemi di tagli alle forniture,  benche’ una delle nostre centrali nucleari non abbia funzionato a pieno regime a causa di un guasto.  Anzi,  la Finlandia sta mettendo a punto un sistema per produrre idrogeno nei periodi di abbondanza di elettricita’ (perche’ la produzione di idrogeno ne richiede tanta) e stoccarlo,  per poi usarlo in caso di necessita’ per produrre elettricita’ nei momenti di crisi.

La durata del di’ si e’ maggiormente dilatata e adesso anche al mattino c’e’ parecchia luce.  Nel pomeriggio il buio arriva oltre le 18.

In Italia abbiamo avuto un’ondata di freddo che pero’ e’ stato secco:  non ha portato le piogge e la neve di cui ci sarebbe bisogno.  Le campagne sono gia’ in sofferenza e il lago di Garda,  come del resto il fiume Po e i grandi fiumi,  sono sotto il livello di portata minima.   In realta’ mancano gli invasi montani,  perche’ le estati caldissime li hanno asciugati.

Devo dire che essendo stati in Italia a Febbraio ed avendo sentito chiaramente la primavera bussare alle porte,  ci e’ sembrato al nostro ritorno che l’avremmo potuta trovare anche qui.  Invece no:  qui la primavera non arrivera’ prima di Aprile.  In Italia sbbiamo anche avvistato stormi di uccelli migratori in formazione avviati verso nord,  ma si fermeranno certamente piu’ volte nell’Europa centrale,  prima di approdare qui.

Come sapete,  qui siamo immersi in una natura rigogliosa e prorompente:  siamo anche circondati di animali selvatici di molti tipi che spesso si moltiplicano in soprannumero,  creando perfino squilibri nell’ecosistema.  Per prendersi cura di questo problema e per ridurre gli squilibri (sovente causati dall’uomo),  bisogna mettere in atto strategie mirate.  Parliamo dei cervi,  dei caprioli e delle alci:  ogni autunno il governo decide quanti capi abbattere e da’ le necessarie autorizzazioni alle oganizzazioni di cacciatori;  come ho gia’ detto in altri post,  le regole sono stringenti:  ad esempio non si possono abbattere le femmine gravide.  Quest’anno l’abbattimento mirato ha consentito di eliminare 4o alci sui 40 autorizzati e 700 cervidi sui 960 stabiliti solo sul territorio di Somero,  che si estende per 697.67 km²

Ad una lettura superficiale vi sembreranno molti,  ma considerate questo fatto:  le alci sono autoctone,  ma i cervi,  caprioli e daino no.  Sono stati introdotti in Finlandia alcuni capi solo a scopo venatorio da una famiglia benestante nei dintorni di Tampere all’inizio del ‘900 e da allora hanno proliferato ampiamente.

Che dire della guerra?  Ogni mese quando scrivo questo resoconto mi auguro che si inizino i negoziati di pace,  ma non e’ ancora avvenuto,  come sappiamo.   La situazione preoccupa non poco anche la Finlandia,  naturalmente,  che come detto ha gia’ assaporato il gusto di essere stata per un centinaio di anni sotto la Russia e anche il gusto di essere invasa da Stalin nel 1939,  e non ha nessuna voglia di ripetere l’esperienza.  Come non ne hanno voglia gli stati Baltici,  la Polonia,  la Repubblica Ceca e tutti gli ex URSS,  che appena hanno avuto l’indipendenza sono corsi a mettersi sotto l’ombrello della NATO.

A proposito della guerra insensata lanciata da Putin,  voglio condividere con voi l’intelligente riflessione di Federico Rampini sul Corriere:  “Cosa sarebbe successo se Putin non avesse invaso?” questo il titolo dell’articolo.  Rampini ipotizza che se Putin non avesse invaso l’Ucraina,  avrebbe vinto un partita geopolitica importantissima praticamente senza giocare.  Nei giorni precedenti il famigerato 24 febbraio infatti tutti erano pronti a garantire a Putin qualsiasi condizione:  l’Ucraina sarebbe rimasta senza arsenali,  solo uno stato cuscinetto senza possibilita’ di entrare nella UE ne’ nella NATO,  neutrale come Svezia e Finlandia;  la UE sarebbe rimasta dipendente dalle forniture energetiche russe a vita;  gli USA erano pronti ad un grande negoziato per garantire la sicurezza della Russia e l’inviolabilita’ dei suoi confini;  la NATO era gia’ definita in stato agonizzante;  naturalmente non sarebbe scattata nessuna sanzione e i passaporti russi sarebbero stati ben accetti su qualsiasi suolo straniero;  infine si sarebbe risparmiata la vita di migliaia di militari.  Rampini conclude dicendo che effettivamente Putin era in un momento magico,  in quei giorni,  con tutta l’Europa genuflessa e gli USA arrendevoli pur di non entrare in guerra,  ma non ha saputo sfruttarlo.

Speriamo dunque che presto si torni a parlare di pace,  se non altro perche’ gli arsenali di ambo le parti si stanno svuotando,  cosi’ l’Europa puo’ tornare alla vita normale,  visto che anche la pandemia ormai ce la siamo buttata alle spalle.

A Month in my Photos.

February was overall quite mild in Finland.  We had temperatures always close to zero degrees C (32F) and little snow.  Only now at the end of the month did an abundant snowfall allow us to resume the last skiing sessions.

Thanks to the particularly mild weather,  we were able to save a lot on heating costs and since the wind often made our wind farms spin,  we never had problems with supply cuts,  even though one of our nuclear plants did not work at full capacity regime due to a fault.  Indeed,  Finland is developing a system for producing hydrogen in periods of electricity abundance (because hydrogen production requires a lot of it) and storing it,  to then use it if necessary to produce electricity in times of crisis .

The duration of the day has expanded more and now there is a lot of light even in the morning.  In the afternoon it gets dark after 6pm.

In Italy we had a cold wave which was dry,  however:  it didn’t bring the rain and snow we would need.  The countryside is already suffering and Lake Garda,  as well as the Po river and the major rivers,  are below the minimum flow rate.  Actually,  there are no mountain reservoirs,  because the very hot summers have dried them out.

I must say that having been in Italy in February and having clearly heard spring knocking on the door,  it seemed to us on our return that we could find it here too.  But no:  here spring won’t arrive before April.  In Italy we have also seen flocks of migratory birds in formation heading north,  but they will certainly stop several times in central Europe,  before landing here.

As you know,  here we are immersed in luxuriant and unbridled nature:  we are also surrounded by wild animals of many types which often multiply in excess,  even imbalancing in the ecosystem.  To take care of this problem and to reduce the imbalance (often caused by man),  targeted strategies must be implemented.  Let’s talk about deer,  roe deer and elks:  every autumn the government decides how many animals to shoot and gives the necessary authorizations to hunting organizations;  as I have already said in other posts,  the rules are stringent:  for example,  pregnant females cannot be killed.  This year targeted culling made it possible to eliminate 40 elks out of the 40 authorized and 700 cervids out of the 960 established in the Somero area alone,  which extends for 697.67 km2

At a superficial reading,  they will seem like many,  but consider this fact:  moose are native,  but deer,  roe deer and fallow deer are not.  A few animals were introduced to Finland just for hunting purposes by a wealthy family near Tampere in the early 1900s and have proliferated extensively ever since.

What about the war in Europe?  Every month when I write this report,  I hope that peace negotiations will begin,  but it hasn’t happened yet,  as we know.  The situation also worries Finland,  naturally,  which,  as mentioned,  has already enjoyed the priviledge of having been under the Russian domination for a hundred years and also the priviledge of being invaded by Stalin in 1939,  and has no desire to repeat the experience.  Just as the Baltic states,  Poland,  the Czech Republic and all the former USSR,  which ran to shelter themselves under the NATO umbrella as soon as they became independent .

Regarding the senseless war launched by Putin,  I want to share with you Italian journalist Federico Rampini’s intelligent article published in the Corriere:  “What would have happened if Putin hadn’t invaded?” this is the title of the article.  Rampini hypothesizes that if Putin hadn’t invaded Ukraine,  he would have won a very important geopolitical game practically without playing.  In the days preceding the infamous February 24th,  in fact,  everyone was ready to guarantee Putin any conditions:  Ukraine would be left without arsenals,  only a buffer state with no possibility of joining the EU or NATO,  neutral like Sweden and Finland;  the EU would remain dependent on Russian energy supplies for life;  the USA was ready for a big negotiation to guarantee the security of Russia and the inviolability of its borders;  NATO was already defined as agonizing;  of course no sanctions would have been triggered and Russian passports would have been welcome on any foreign soil;  finally the lives of thousands of soldiers would have been spared.  Rampini concludes by saying that Putin was actually in a magical moment,  in those days,  with all of Europe kneeling and the USA compliant in order not to go to war,  but he was unable to exploit it.

Let’s therefore hope that soon we will return to talk about peace,  even only because the arsenals of both sides are emptying,  so Europe can return to normal life,  given that even the pandemic has now been put behind us .
