Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Il tempo di Febbraio ci ha dato ancora una volta la misura dell’ENORME cambiamento climatico cui stiamo assistendo – e contro il quale si sta facendo ben poco.  Nella prima parte di Febbraio infatti abbiamo avuto nevicate copiose,  come dovrebbe essere (e anche qualcosa in piu’,  veramente!),  seppur con temperature di poco sotto lo zero;  ma poi a meta’ mese un rialzo termico ha provocato lo scioglimento di parte della neve accumulata,  causando cosi’ piccole-grandi inondazioni dappertutto.  Ai lati di molte strade si sono formate larghe pozzanghere,  le vie dei centri citta’ e paesi erano parzialmente invase dall’acqua…insomma abbiamo avuto dei disagi prematuri:  lo scioglimento infatti dovrebbe avvenire non prima di fine marzo,  se il clima fosse giusto.

Dopo il rialzo termico,  si e’ avuto un nuovo abbassamento:  il termometro e’ tornato sotto lo zero e tutta l’acqua non scolata negli scarichi ha ghiacciato,  naturalmente.  In tutto questo c’e’ di buono che grazie all’enorme quantita’ di neve siamo almeno riusciti a sciare:  i volontari sono stati indaffaratissimi a preparare tutte le piste del circondario,  hanno battuto e ribattuto i percorsi inseguendo i cambiamenti di condizione della neve.  Grazie a loro ci siamo potuti divertire.

Le giornate si sono allungate moltissimo:  adesso si fa buio dopo le 18,  proprio come in Italia.

In un giorno di neve e -4 gradi ho visto uno in motocicletta:  una rarita’.  Naturalmente tutto e’ possibile,  con abbigliamento adatto e ruote chiodate,  ma e’ proprio una cosa da machi. 🙂

La Finlandia ha battuto in finale la Russia nell’hockey su ghiaccio,  conquistando la medaglia d’oro ai Giochi Olimpici.  I leoni hanno battuto l’orso.  Son soddisfazioni non solo sportive!

Il titolo del HS e’ eloquente:  La vittoria sportiva piu’ grande – anche perche’ qui l’hockey e’ lo sport nazionale.

Non ho seguito le Olimpiadi:  non mi interessa seguire lo sport in tv,  preferisco uscire a praticarlo.  Ho visto la finale di curling per caso perche’ mio marito la guardava.  L’Italia e’ tornata a casa con 17 medaglie e la Finlandia con 8,  entrambi i Paesi con 2 ori.

Una curiosita’ sui Giochi sicuramente e’ il fatto che i bersagli del Biathlon,  quei sistemi automatici dove gli atleti sparano,  sono made in Finland:  per una volta non made in China!!

La situazione covid sta migliorando velocemente anche qui:  al momento abbiamo 1.586 casi per 100mila abitanti,  mentre in Italia sono 1402.  Qui pero’ le restrizioni sono state tolte gia’ dal 6 febbraio e la mascherina e’ sempre solo raccomandata,  anche se molta gente la usa ancora.

Purtroppo il mese di febbraio ci ha portato l’offensiva russa in Ucraina,  che un po’ avevamo sottovalutato,  specie noi italiani,  la sentivamo un po’ lontana ed improbabile.  I finlandesi invece avevano ben capito cosa stava succedendo e ne parlavano nei media da molto tempo prima di noi.  E’ proprio vero che noi italiani parliamo sempre troppo di politica interna (come se fosse pregevole) e quella estera ci e’ talvolta sconosciuta.

La guerra e’ una cosa terribile e le guerre di invasione sono ingiustificabili,  benche’ l’uomo le abbia praticate dalla notte dei tempi in ogni angolo del nostro povero pianeta.  C’e’ da chiedersi come si possa  nell’Europa del terzo millennio pensare alla guerra:  in particolare dopo due anni di pandemia,  ma forse e’ proprio adesso il momento di attaccare,  mentre tutti siamo usciti indeboliti da questa truce esperienza.

Come in molte localita’ in Italia,  anche qui in Finlandia ci sono manifestazioni di solidarieta’ al popolo ucraino.  Nessuno e’ disposto a sopportare questo enorme affronto alla liberta’ e democrazia di un Paese sovrano.  Senza contare che oltre alle migliaia di profughi,  di morti,  di feriti,  di mutilati,  di bimbi senza futuro,  alla distruzione,  al dolore,  ci saranno innumerevoli danni all’ambiente e agli animali.

Avrete certamente sentito parlare della condizione posta da Putin per la de-escalation:  la “finlandizzazione” dell’Ucraina,  cioe’ la condizione nella quale si e’ trovata la Finlandia fino agli anni ’60,  (dal 1944,  anno in cui si concluse con un trattato la guerra iniziata nel 1939 con l’invasione perpetrata da Stalin).  Si tratta di diventare Neutrale,  di non aderire alla NATO e di intrattenere rapporti di buon vicinato.  Per la verita’ la Finlandia ha ben prosperato anche in questa condizione:  ha potuto comunque entrare a far parte della UE,  dell’area Euro e il suo esercito fa solo missioni di peace-keeping.

Una buona notizia:  Finnair,  la compagnia di bandiera,  ha lanciato un programma di investimenti di 200 milioni di euro in vista della ripresa dei viaggi dopo lo stop pandemico.  Gli investimenti si differenziano in rinnovamento della flotta,  apertura e potenziamento di alcune rotte,  miglioramento del comfort e dei servizi nelle classi Business.

A Month in my Photos.

The weather in February once again showed how HUGE the climate change we are seeing is – and against which very little is being done.  In fact,  in the first part of February we had copious snowfalls,  as it should be (and even something more than usual,  actually!),  although with temperatures just below zero degrees C;  but then in mid-month a rise in temperatures caused the melting of part of the accumulated snow,  thus causing small or larger floods everywhere.  On the roadsides there were large puddles,  the streets of the city centers and villages were partially invaded by water … in short,  we had premature inconveniences:  the melting should take place no earlier than the end of March,  if the weather worked right.

After the rise in temperature,  there was a new lowering:  the thermometer returned below zero and all the non-drained water froze,  of course.  In all this,  the good thing is that thanks to the enormous amount of snow we were at least able to ski:  the volunteers were very busy preparing all the slopes in the area,  they beated the trails again and again,  chasing the changes in the snow conditions.  Thanks to them we were able to have fun. 

Days are much longer:  now it is blright until past 6 p.m.,  just like in Italy.

On a snowy day and -4 degrees C,  I saw somebody riding a motorcycle:  a rarity in winter.  Of course,  anything is possible,  with suitable clothing and spiked wheels,  but it’s just a thing for macho-men. 🙂

Finland beat Russia in ice hockey in the final,  getting the gold medal at the Olympic Games.  “The lions beat the bear”.  Their sense of satisfaction goes beyond sport itself.  As you can see in the above shot,  the title of the HS tells all:  “The greatest sport victory”,  also because in Finland ice-hockey is the national sport.

I have not followed the Olympics:  I am not interested in following sport on TV,  I prefer to go out and practice it.  I saw the curling finals because my husband was watching it.  Italy returned home with 17 medals and Finland with 8,  both countries with 2 golds.

A fun fact about the Games is certainly the fact that the Biathlon targets,  the automatic systems where athletes shoot,  are made in Finland:  for once not made in China!!

The covid situation is improving rapidly here too:  at the moment we have 1,586 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants,  while in Italy there are 1,402.  Here,  however,  the restrictions have already been removed since February 6th and masks are just recommended,  even if many people still use them.

Unfortunately,  the month of February brought us the Russian offensive in Ukraine,  which we had somehow underestimated,  especially we Italians,  we felt it was a little distant and unlikely.  The Finns,  on the other hand,  had understood what was happening and had been talking about it in the media for a long time before us.  It is really true that we Italians always talk too much about internal politics and that foreign politics is sometimes unknown to us.

War is a terrible thing and invasion wars are inexcusable,  although man has practiced them since the dawn of time in every corner of our poor planet.  One wonders how in the third millennium Europe anybody can conceive war:  particularly after two years’ pandemic,  but perhaps now is the time to attack,  while we are all weaker after this grim experience. 

As in many places in Italy,  also here in Finland there are demonstrations of solidarity with the Ukrainian people.  No one is willing to stand this enormous attack to the freedom and democracy of a sovereign country.  After death and devastation and thousands of refugees,  dead,  injured,  wounded,  children without future,  there will be huge damage to environment and animals too.

You have certainly heard about the condition set by Mr. Putin for de-escalation:  the “Finlandization” of Ukraine,  that is the condition in which Finland has found itself until the 1960’s (from 1944 when the war that began in 1939 by Stalin’s invasion ended with a treaty).  In short it is about becoming Neutral,  not joining NATO and having good neighborly relations.   Actually Finland has prospered well in spite of this condition:  it has still been able to join the EU,  the Euro area and its army only carries out peace-keeping missions.

A Good news:  Finnair,  the national airline,  has launched an investment program of 200 million euros in view of increasing travelling after the pandemic halt.  Investments differ in fleet renewal,  opening and strengthening of some routes,  improvement of comfort and services in Business classes.
