1) Les Grands Voyages – The Great Journeys, 1926.
3) La Maledizione – The course, 1931.
5) Riflessi del Tempo – Reflection of Time, 1928.
Magritte in Helsinki.
In the new museum Amos Rex in the centre of Helsinki it is possible to visit until next May an interesting exibition of surrealist Belgian painter René Magritte. Not a large exibition but well described and set up, you will find there not only major masterpieces but also minor works: for instance some advertising posters which Magritte painted in a special period of his life. In this post I’ll share with you some paintings. I’ll talk about the modern structure and functionality of the Amos Rex museum itself in a further post.
1) Les Grands Voyages – The Great Journeys, 1926. This painting, in an unusual format, belongs to a turning point in Magritte’s career: the esperimentation which will lead to transform real objects into “disturbing” objects.
2) Les Regards perdus – Faraway looks, 1927-28. Magritte often repeated the same object again and again in different perspectives, thus exploring the potential of each situation.
3) La Malédiction – The course, 1931.
4) La lampada del Filosofo – The Philosopher’s Lamp, 1936. This painting is also the exibition manifesto: it is not just a self-portrait, but a burlesque representation of a philosopher exploring the universe and the human condition, illuminated by a lamp which is itself odd and surrealistic.
5) Les Reflets du temps – Reflection of Time, 1928.
I would like to end this post with this odd cover of a past exibition catalogue and a few words upon Surrealism. It is a movement in modern art, literature and cinema that flourished in the years between the two world wars, whose powerful creative impulse influences art still nowadays. The movement began as a reaction to Realism and Cubism. Surrealistic means beyond realistic: hence artworks are created outside the conscious control of reason, aesthetics and morality; artists claim a creative freedom close to what we enjoy when we are dreaming. The same creative freedom that often just introduces “disturbing” clues insted of bringing us to reality.
Finally I’ll quote a definition of modern art by Italian critic Vittorio Sgarbi, which I heard myself recently in a tv programme: “Modern art is not a representation anymore: it is a thought”.

As you say, “odd” indeed. But very thought provoking and unique art. That one picture looks like Rowan Atkinson!
