Yellowhammers in the Snow

Among the guests who regularly visit our feeders are the Yellowhammers (Emberiza citrinella).  These passerine birds who can boast a brilliant-yellow coloured breast and speckled back keep us company in summer and winter here in Somero,  as they partly migrate from Finland.  They are about 16 cm long and weigh about 30 gr. There is sexual dimorphism:  females have darker plumage.  The favorite food of the Yellowhammers is oats,   in fact they frequent the fields where this ceral is sown.

The Finnish name of these beautiful birds is:  Keltasirkku.

A FUN FACT:  the Yellowhammers only scratch on the ground to look for food,  they do not fly onto the mangers.  For example,  if they find nothing on the ground in our garden,  they move to the neighbor’s.  Nature has programmed them like this.

In the above video:  a lot of traffic at our feeders,  where the Yellowhammers are on the ground.

  1. Cute! What a beautiful bird that is! The funny thing is, I don’t know anything about birds, I can distinguish a flying bird and a floating one. I get confused if a bird floats as well as flies. (Stop doing that, ducks!) But I instantly remembered the Dutch name of this bird, Geelgors, and I now also know the Italian, Finnish, and English word for it. One learns every day. 🙂

  2. Nice birds around your feeder! It’s called yellow Sparrow, “gulspurv” in Norwegian, and chosen to the bird of the year 🙂 I haven’t seen anyone so far this year.

  5. so cute. love the video clip as well. it must be great to have a bird feeder in your garden (I don’t have a garden, and rules don’t allow me to fix anything on the balcony wall) and observe wildlife so close.

  6. Fabulous photos!! These are lovely little birds that I see here in New Zealand, too. Obviously, somebody brought them in and some escaped into the wild.

Your link is a welcome addition to My Corner of the World’ this week!
