I migliori auguri da parte nostra a tutti voi cari lettori con un’immagine che rispecchia il senso che ha il tempo di Natale per i finlandesi: pace e tranquillità.

Il Natale qui comincia il giorno 24 a mezzogiorno, quando viene dichiarata la “Pace di Natale”. A quel punto tutte le attivita’ si fermano e la gente si ritrova in casa. Il 24 pomeriggio-sera e’ dedicato al cenone e all’apertura dei regali. Il 25 e 26 al riposo e alle eventuali visite ai parenti che non si sono visti il 24. Tradizionalmente le celebrazioni religiose si tengono il 24 pomeriggio e il 25 mattina; e’ poi consuetudine visitare i cimiteri. Altro rituale sempre rispettato e’ la Joulusauna, la sauna di Natale, con la propria famiglia. (Questo Natale ha sconvolto le nostre abitudini: persino tutte le messe sono state cancellate).

CURIOSITA’: Qui e’ ancora molto in auge l’usanza di mandarsi cartoline natalizie. Quest’anno i finlandesi ne hanno fatte circolare 8 milioni; al tempo prima dei social il record era arrivato a 50 milioni!

Non puo’ mancare una canzone di Natale presa dal vastissimo repertorio finlandese. Oggi un tocco di musica classica e’ perfetto: questa e’ del grande compositore Jean Sibelius- “Jo joutuu ilta”.

Our best wishes to all of you dear readers! The image I chose gives you an idea of the basic sense of Christmas time for Finnish people: tranquillity, peace as much as possible.

Christmas in Finland starts on December 24th at midday, when the “Christmas Peace” is declared. After that, all activities stop and people celebrate at home. On Christmas eve we have our traditional dinner and open our presents. Days 25th and 26th are dedicated to resting or visiting other relatives that we haven’t met on 24th. Religious celebrations are held on Christmas eve in the afternoon or on Christmas day in the morning. It is a long-time tradition to visit cemeteries after church. Another consolidated ritual for every family is the Joulusauna, the Christmas sauna. (In this vexed year all our traditions were upset and all religious services cancelled).

A FUN FACT: People still like to send season’s greetings by postcard, here in Finland. This year 8 million cards have been sent; in the years prior to social media the record was 50 million.
