A Place to Rest along the Road.

When you travel in the north of Finland you will be perhaps surprised with how scarcely inhabited it is.  Nevertheless you will always find a diner or a place to take a pleasant break along the road;  maybe you have to run many kilometres,  but there will be several refreshment places.   It is usually about small grills or kiosks,  usually open just during the summer season,  but they will be invariably picturesque,  decorated with flowers or wooden handicraft works and sometimes they also sell some produce.  If nothing else,  you can always stop in the minimarket of a small town.

For instance you will recognize a road widening with a parking place to stretch out and a small cafeteria,  maybe on a lake shore,  where you did not fancy at all!

For instance the place I am sharing today in this post.  This is a bigger cafe’-restaurant hosting a few shops too.  We found it not far from Suomussalmi,  a delightful town in east Finland,  on our way to Kuusamo.   The place is welcoming and furnished as usually these places are,  with tables also outside,  a children corner and a few small shops selling local handicraft like the boiled wool wall-rugs you can see in my shots.

In large cafe’-restaurants like this you can often find an info point about the area too,  often equipped with free brochures.

Last but not least:  the lovely landscape surrounding the diner was just welcome to admire and for taking a few steps.

  1. Hello,

Wonderful photos from your trip, the restaurant looks nice. I love the wood wall rugs, they are beautiful. The last view of the water and sky are lovely scenes and image. Take care, have a happy day!

  2. I did visit Suomussalmi back in late70´s and early 80´s several times. My mothers big sister lived there with her family. Maybe I´ll visit there some time in the Future as well. Would love to see Raatteentie also.
