Caramelle? Ma no!… Sono bacche di Alchechengi, (Physalis alkekengi) nascoste nel loro calice membranoso che le fa rassomigliare a tante lanternine cinesi.
Queste bacche ornamentali vivono bene qui nel sud Finlandia e danno un tocco di colore al giardino in autunno: ad esempio adesso, in ottobre, quando molti altri fiori hanno finito la stagione della fioritura. Sono piante molto resistenti e si moltiplicano negli anni. Io le raccolgo per tempo, quando alcune sono ancora verdi e mi diverto a fare composizioni sempre nuove. L’arancio vivo e’ il colore della piena maturazione.

Candies? No way!… These are Chinese lantern berries, (Physalis alkekengi).
Outside they look like tiny Chinese lanterns, wrapped as they are in their papery covering. These berries survive very well in the southern Finnish climate and widespread quickly. They give a touch of colour to the autumn garden. In October almost all other flowers are more or less gone, whereas the Alkekengi are still getting ripe.
The colour of full ripeness is bright orange, but I like to collect them when some are still green, or pale yellow, so I can create various compositions.

Wow – I love these Physalis! My mother had them growing in her garden and she gave me a few plants – but they have disappeared. Should plant new ones next summer.

I remember how fascinated I was as a child when the ‘lanterns’ formed on these plants and now associate the memory with Autumn days. You have an abundance of them. Your display in the bowl looks beautiful.

Sapessi come mi piacciono! l’anno scorso abbiamo piantato in giardino queste piante in un posticino ombroso, le ho usate anch’io per qualche decorazione con le ortensie essiccate, ma sono morte, probabilmente per il caldo estivo, sicuramente eccessivo per il loro genere, nonostante siano perenni
