Tra Italia e Finlandia

Fra i nuovi nati di ogni primavera sulle sponde del lago di Garda ci sono anche i simpatici pulcini della Folaga  (Fulica atra),  un uccello acquatico dal piumaggio nero ma con un’inconfondibile macchia bianca sulla fronte.  La folaga con i suoi pulcini forse fa istintivamente meno tenerezza del cigno,  il quale è il più paparazzato di tutti i volatili acquatici in questa zona,  ma senz’altro quegli esserini pigolanti meritano un post nel mio blog! 

Nell’economia della natura,  come sappiamo,  non ci sono solo animali belli ed appariscenti,  ma tutti concorrono al mantenimento dell’equilibrio ambientale.

La folaga in finnico si chiama:  Nokikana.

Eccoli qui con mamma folaga che li tiene d’occhio. 

Questo volatile è piuttosto diffuso in tutti i continenti,  vive preferibilmente nei canneti dove trova rifugio e nidifica,  è un ottimo nuotatore,  è stanziale e la sua alimentazione è onnivora:  può cibarsi anche solo di alghe o canne se la stagione non consente un approvvigionamento sufficiente di pesce e molluschi.

Coot’s Chicks. 

Among the tender chicks that every spring enrich the waterfowl at lake Garda I’d like to show you the Eurasian Coot’s ones,  today.  (Fulica atra)

The Eurasian coot,  also known as Common coot,  is a water bird with black glossy plumage and a large white spot on the head,  called shield.  Her chicks are beautiful but perhaps do not attract human attention as the swan’s,  which are the most photographed ever,  in this corner of the world. 

As far as I am concerned,  they do deserve a post in my blog:  not only eye-catching animals give their contribution to the welfare of Nature!

In my photos you can admire the chicks with their mom,  watching them all the time.

The Eurasian coot,  in Finnish:  Nokikana,  is found in all continents;  it lives preferably in waterside grasslands and cane thickets,  where it takes refuge and breeds.  It is usually a resident bird and an omnivorous one:  besides fish and shellfish it can just eat algae or canes if better food is missing.
