Tra Italia e Finlandia

Il repertorio di canzoni natalizie finlandesi e’ immenso:  negli anni i finnici hanno scritto tante e meravigliose melodie dedicate a questa festivita’.  Sara’ che qui il Natale e’ cosi’ sentito e cosi’ suggestivo,  sara’ che questa festa e’ sempre stata importante:  anche coloro che non valutano l’aspetto religioso,  comunque aspettano questo momento dell’anno per stare in famiglia,  riposare,  leggere un libro sul divano,  godere il calore del caminetto,  assaggiare piatti squisiti,  ascoltare musica,  farsi compagnia l’un l’altro…

In questo post vi propongo l’ascolto di tre brani tipici finlandesi natalizi:  il primo e’ un classico,  composto da Jean Sibelius,  il maggiore compositore sinfonico di questo Paese.  Si intitola:  “En etsi valtaa,  loistoa” cioe’:  “Non cerco potere e ricchezza”  e ve lo propongo nell’esecuzione del baritono Jorma Hynninen,  perche’ questo brano va cantato da una voce importante.  Il testo,  di ispirazione religiosa,  dice:  “Non bramo ricchezze o potere,  per Natale  mi basta la luce della parola di Dio e la pace in terra”.

Il secondo brano che vi propongo e’ un moderno:  anche molti cantanti pop e rappers hanno composto brani natalizi;  perfino qualche hard rock band ha fatto versioni rock di brani classici.   La band che ha composto ed esegue questo brano si chiama Aikakone (La macchina del tempo),  il titolo e’:  “Hiljiaisuus”,  cioe’:  “Silenzio”  e il testo dice piu’ o meno:  “Intorno a me tutto e’ silenzio,  nella citta’ deserta…ma come vorrei sentire un coro di angeli che porta la buona novella del Natale!”;  quindi un testo molto contemporaneo.

Il terzo brano e’ una vecchia  canzoncina per bambini tradizionale Scandinava.  Il titolo e’:  “Tonttujen jouluyö”,  cioe’:  “La notte di Natale dei folletti” e racconta le avventure in quella notte dei Tonttu,  i folletti aiutanti di Babbo Natale.

Christmas Songs.   

In Finland you will find a very wide chice of Christmas inspired songs.  Through the years,  Finnish musicians have composed a big amount of carols,  because Christmas here is so important,  because the people here are all so much involved in this festivity;  even rappers and hard rock bands have their own version of Christmas songs!  Even for the people who do not follow the religious celebration,  it is  a moment of  relaxation;  people spend their free time in the family,  reading their favourite book with a warm blanket and a mug of coffee,  just resting,  enjoying being home by the fireplace,  listening to music,  tasting delicious food,  just being together…

I will share with you today three different Christmas songs,  for everyone’s taste.  The first is a classical music piece:  it was composed by Jean Sibelius,  the most famous Finnish composer.  Its title is: “En etsi valtaa loistoa”,  which means: “I do not search riches or power” and its text goes:  “I do not look for riches or power,  for Christmas I am content with peace on earth and the light of the Word of God”.  I have chosen the interpretation of baritone Jorma Hynninen,  as it is best sung by a classical type of voice.

The second song I will share with you is a modern one,  performed by a pop band called Aikakone;  its title is:  “Hiljaisuus”,  which means:  “Silence”.  The text goes more or less like this:  “All is silent in the bare city…how I would like to hear a chorus of angels bringing the Good News of Jesus”.  Quite a contemporary text.

The third song is an old Scandinavian children’s song,  finally.  The title is:  “Tonttujen Jouluyö”,  meaning:  “The Elves’s Christmas Night” and it tells about the adventures of Santa’s helpers,  the elves,  in Finnish:  Tonttu.
