First frosty nights. What a nice sensation after the first frosty nights in Autumn! When you wake up in the morning and all around you is white: it is not snow, but it gives the same childish euphoria! All is framed in white lines which do not cancel colours but enhance them.
Usually in the South of Finland we have the first frosty nights in early October; this year the season has been particularly mild and we have had them a bit later. These photos were taken on a November morning. During the day temperatures can rise roughly until 10 degrees C in October but until 2 in November; then we must consider that on cloudy days, temperatures will be milder, but on clear sunny days it will be colder.
This is a bare, deadly season: trees have dropped more or less all leaves, so there aren’t anymore beautiful colours; only wild roses and a few other plants resist stubbornly with their leaves and red berries. Migratory birds have all left, perhaps some swans are still here (they will depart when lakes freeze). Many animals are winter-sleeping ( for instance the badger, which is anyway difficult to see) and for the poor hares and deers it is getting a difficult time too: the hunting season is open, so better stay hidden! They are not anyway so active as in Spring: this is not time to waste energies. Therefore there is not very much to see in the nature…
