L’ideale e’ sempre vertirsi “a cipolla”.

E piu’ o meno subito dopo…

Along the Via Karelia.
Today I’m taking you on the Via Karelia, the main artery that runs for 1080km along the eastern Finnish border, from the far south to Mount Salla, passing through different regions, traditions, landscapes, cuisine, dialects…
It has the Latin name of “Via”, like the ancient Roman roads.
The photos are from June 2026, and although we had pleasant sunny days, we also had rain and drizzle. This is to say that when heading north, you have to be prepared for anything when it comes to weather. The ideal is always to travel in layers.
On our trip there were also some Italian guests, and seeing our Finland through their eyes was fun!
When we reached Suomussalmi, quite close to the Arctic Circle, we encountered the road sign indicating Reindeers.
And almost immediately…they were there.

It’s wonderful to see your pictures of the reindeer. Your photos could almost be coming from our Northwest Territories where there are many reindeer that are herded by the Inuvialuit (one of our aboriginal peoples). There are their cousins, the caribou, too of course, but they are very wary of humans and often hard to see. Cheers.

Thank you Lynette for your message and info. Good to mention our aboriginal peoples too!
