Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Settembre e’ stato molto bello e piacevole in Finlandia.  Le temperature si sono mantenute a ridosso dei 20 gradi e solo a fine mese sono scese di un po’.  Anche le piogge,  regolari e nelle medie come quantita’ e intensita’,  hanno soddisfatto il fabbisogno di acqua.  Non vi sembra un chiaro segnale di crisi climatica il dover parlare dell’intensita’ dei fenomeni meteorologici?  Senz’altro 30 o 40 anni fa non se ne parlava;  a parte qualche temporale estivo,  non c’era il timore di tempeste furiose in autunno.

Settembre in Italia ha finalmente portato l’abbassamento di temperature sperato.  Dai 35 gradi di inizio mese siamo passati a 26.  In Italia pero’ abbiamo avuto rovesci violenti e tempeste di vento.

Nonostante le piogge gradevoli e necessarie,  almeno qui nella Finlandia di sud-ovest non ho trovato funghi Porcini.  Di Finferli sono punteggiati i boschi,  ma quest’anno di Porcini si e’ sentita la mancanza.  Ne ho trovato uno di numero,  a fine agosto.  I Finferli sono veramente smart:  essi nascono a poco a poco,  hanno una stagione lunghissima.  Se si conoscono i posti,  se ne possono trovare da luglio a novembre.  I Porcini invece hanno una stagione molto breve:  in 2 o 3 settimane sono finiti.

Le giornate si sono accorciate visibilmente e gli uccelli migratori stanno partendo in larghi stormi.  Che bello vederli in formazione e talvolta sentire i loro alti richiami!

Adesso siamo nel momento piu’ bello del foliage.  In Lapponia e’ iniziato gia’ da principio mese.  Qui al sud continuera’ finche’ gli alberi avranno foglie,  a ottobre inoltrato.

Fra le altre notizie:  Google ha investito circa 13 miliardi di dollari in Finlandia per realizzare uno o una serie di data center.  Il governo attuale e’ naturalmente fautore del progetto e ben felice,  ma la societa’ civile si interroga sulla convenienza della cosa,  a causa del fatto che queste strutture sono parecchio energivore.  In realta’,  dei circa 1200 data centers al mondo gia’ all’inizio del 2026,  oltre 100 sono in Finlandia.

A proposito di investimenti:  la finlandese Hesburger,  che propone hamburgers sullo stile Mac Donald’s,  ha aperto un punto vendita a Matera.

La nazionale finlandese di pallavolo ha battuto la nazionale italiana ai Campionati europei ed ha conquistato la medaglia di bronzo sabato 26,  battendo la Slovenia,  proprio a Milano.

Fra le notizie tristi del mese,  annoveriamo quella di due cuccioli di orso che sono finiti sotto un treno mentre attraversavano i binari in una localita’ della Finlandia centrale.   I cuccioli stavano seguendo la madre,  che e’ passata senza problemi.  Naturalmente non si tratta di un passaggio a livello cittadino.

Fra le notizie tristi del mese ci sarebbe anche la situazione geopolitica internazionale,  dove vecchi autocrati,  macchiati di crimini di guerra,  continuano ad assassinare civili inermi e blaterano insensatezze,  bugie e minacce davanti ad una ONU pressoche’ esautorata,  facendosi beffe del diritto internazionale.  Una sola notizia e’ positiva:  Putin ha detto che non intende attaccare l’Europa,  esattamente come non aveva intenzione di invadere l’Ucraina nel 2022.  Ci ha rassicurati.

Fra le notizie irritanti annovero il fatto che l’aeroporto internazionale di Milano Malpensa sia stato intitolato a Silvio Berlusconi.  Un personaggio troppo divisivo,  nel quale non tutti ci riconosciamo.  Gli altri aeroporti italiani sono intitolati a:  Marco Polo,  Leonardo Da Vinci,  Galileo Galilei,  Valerio Catullo,  ai giudici Falcone e Borsellino vittime di mafia…non mi pare che Berlusconi abbia la stessa levatura.

Parlando invece di vere buone notizie,  personalmente sono felice che la collaborazione fra il Canada e l’Unione Europea si sia rafforzata ed arrivi a livelli elevati.  Abbiamo davvero tanto in comune.

A Month in my Photos.

September was very beautiful and pleasant in Finland.  Temperatures remained close to 20 degrees and only dropped a little at the end of the month.  Even the rains,  regular and average in quantity and intensity,  satisfied the need of water.  Doesn’t it seem like a clear sign of a climate crisis to you that we have to talk about the intensity of meteorological phenomena?  Certainly 30 or 40 years ago there was no mention of it;  apart from a few summer storms,  there was no fear of raging storms in the fall.

September in Italy has finally brought the hoped-for drop in temperatures.  From 35 C degrees at the beginning of the month we dropped to 26.  In Italy however,  we had violent showers and windstorms.

Despite the pleasant and necessary rains,  at least here in southwestern Finland I have not found any Porcini mushrooms.  The woods are dotted with chanterelles,  but this year porcini mushrooms were missed.  I found one in number,  at the end of August.  Chanterelles are really smart:  they sping up little by little,  they have a very long season.  If you know the places,  you can find them from July to November.  Porcini mushrooms,  on the other hand,  have a very short season:  they are finished in 2 or 3 weeks.

The days have visibly shortened and migratory birds are leaving in large flocks.  How nice to see them in formation and sometimes hear their loud calls!

We’re now in the most beautiful foliage season.  In Lapland,  it has been going on since  the beginning of the month.   Here in the south it will continue until the trees have leaves,  in late October.

Among other news:  Google has invested around $13 billion in Finland to build one or a series of data centers.  The current government is naturally a supporter of the project and very happy about it,  but civil society is questioning the convenience of this,  due to the fact that these structures are very energy intensive.  Actually,  out of the approximately 1200 data centers in the world already at the beginning of 2026,  over 100 are in Finland.

Speaking of investments:  the Finnish Hesburger,  which offers Mac Donald’s style hamburgers,  has opened a store in Matera.

The Finnish national volleyball team beat the Italian national team at the European Championships and won the bronze medal last Saturday,  playing against Slovenia,  in Milan.

Among the sad news of the month,  I can include that regarding two bear cubs who ended up under a train while crossing the tracks in a place in central Finland.  The cubs were following their mother,  who passed without any problems.  Of course,  this was no urban level crossing.

Among the sad news of the month,  I can account also the international geopolitical situation,  where old autocrats,  guilty with war crimes,  continue to murder defenseless civilians and blather nonsense,  lies and threats in front of an almost powerless UN,  making a mockery of international law.  Only one is positive: Putin said he does not intend to attack Europe,  just as he did not intend to invade Ukraine in 2022.  He reassured us.

Among the irritating news,  I can include the fact that Milan Malpensa international airport was named after Silvio Berlusconi.  A very divisive figure,  somebody in which not all of us recognize ourselves.  Other Italian airports are named after:  Marco Polo,  Leonardo Da Vinci,  Galileo Galilei,  Valerius Catullus and the judges Falcone and Borsellino,  victims of the mafia… I don’t think Berlusconi has the same stature.

Speaking of real good news,  I am personally happy that the collaboration between Canada and the European Union has strengthened and reached high levels.  We really have a lot in common.
