The Nordic House.

The Nordic House.

The Nordic House is a cultural center,  library,  and museum combined,  located just outside the center of Reykjavik,  Iceland’s beautiful capital.  Its goal is to promote and support cultural ties between Iceland and the other Nordic countries. To this end,  the Nordic House organizes a rich program of cultural events,  exhibitions,  seminars,  activities and children’s courses.

Here it is,  the Nordic House,  seen from the outside.  What a surprise for us Finnish tourists to learn that it was designed by Finnish architect Alvar Aalto!  We can indeed recognize familiar features:  the white color,  the square structure,  the simple lines,  and the desire to make the building blend into the surrounding environment through the use of wood and the blue tiles on the roof.

The interiors are furnished in light wood.  We only visited the library.

A graphic artwork on display in the library.

In the space in front is the Dill café/restaurant.  Don’t be surprised by the greenhouse-like structure:  in Iceland in mid-August the temperature was 10 degrees C and it drizzled frequently.

A view of the capital from the Nordic House.  The gigantic building is the famous Hallgrimskirkja church.
