Un mese nelle mie foto.

Agosto e’ stato molto meglio di luglio, dal punto di vista meteorologico, in Finlandia. Forse perche’ a luglio avevamo grandi aspettative di ondate di caldo, che qui non sono arrivate. Agosto ha portato quel tepore estivo, senza esagerazioni, che luglio si era dimenticato. Senza troppa pioggia, pero’.

In Italia agosto ha continuato l’incubo di luglio: temperature invivibili e fenomeni estremi. A proposito: che shock e che dolore sentire cio’ che e’ accaduto in Tibet! Non avevo mai sentito parlare di un fenomeno simile. Anche la bella citta’ italiana di Cremona e’ stata colpita pesantemente dalla grandine.

Certo che stiamo proprio rovinando il pianeta… E di che cosa si preoccupano certi governi? Di legge elettorale?

Le giornate si sono accorciate visibilmente, qui al nord. Le “notti senza notte” sono terminate: adesso il buio arriva alle 22.00. Abbiamo anche visto qualche stella in cielo, in queste notti: era da tanto che non si vedevano.

A meta’ mese per la verita’ qualche nottambulo ha visto anche l’aurora boreale! Qualcuno che era per strada o insonne alle 03.00 del mattino.

Un altro fenomeno che ho visto qualche sera stando in giardino al soraggiungere dell’oscurita’, e’ stato il volo di un paio di pipistrelli. Sapevo che in Finlandia ce ne sono e li avevo visti di sfuggita, ma la settimana scorsa li ho proprio visti bene: con le loro alucce tozze e il loro volo tremolante. La mia vicina di casa mi ha anche chiarito dove trascorrono il lungo inverno in letargo: ad esempio nel magazzino in disuso della sua casa al mare!

Gli uccelli migratori si stanno a poco a poco radunando in gruppi per predisporsi alla partenza. Chissa’ se le loro nidiate sono andate bene, in quest’estate un po’ piu’ fresca del solito, nella quale abbiamo avuto anche meno zanzare del solito. La settimana scorsa ho fotografato un grande stormo di gru a terra, che ripuliva un campo appena mietuto dai semi rimanenti.

Agosto qui al nord e’ il momento dei raccolti, soprattutto dei cereali. Per patate, carote e Co. si aspetta settembre.

La stagione dei frutti di bosco e’ stata ricchissima. Io stessa ho trascorso molto tempo nei boschi a raccogliere lamponi e mirtilli e ne ho fatto marmellate. Inoltre anche i nostri susini sono stati generosi, quest’anno e ce ne hanno donate in quantita’. Per quanto riguarda i funghi, i boschi sono letteralmente disseminati di gialli finferli, mentre non ho ancora trovato porcini, ad eccezione di uno, piccolo e magro. Aspetto le prossime piogge: adesso i boschi sono piuttosto asciutti.

Anche le scuole sono gia’ iniziate, la prossima vacanza sara’a meta’ ottobre.

Fra le notizie del mese: al confine tra Finlandia e Svezia, sul fiume Tornio, e’ stato riattivato un varco naturale che consente ai salmoni di passare. Il varco era stato chiuso per anni, a causa della presenza di una centrale idroelettrica. Il fatto che i salmoni non passassero era contro natura e si e’ finalmente provveduto.

Ancora a proposito di animali, stavolta domestici, e’ appena stata promulgata una legge che obbliga chi tiene un asino a tenerne almeno due: si e’ visto che gli asini soffrono troppo la solitudine.

In vari punti della Finlandia si stanno rimuovendo le barriere o dighe artificiali che costituivano un mezzo per controllare l’altezza delle acque dei laghi. Si stanno ricostruendo le condizioni preesistenti, eliminando le strutture contro natura.

Ai campionati europei di atletica recentemente tenutisi a Birmingham, le finlandesi Kosonen e Vainio hanno rispettivamente conquistato la medaglia d’oro nel lancio del martello e nella maratona.

Il quotidiano italiano “Avvenire”, organo della CEI, ha proposto il Nobel per la Pace ai bambini di Gaza. Molto meritato.

A Month in my Photos.

August weather was much better than July in Finland. Perhaps because in July we had high expectations of heat waves, which didn’t arrive here. August brought that summer warmth, without exaggeration, that July had forgotten. Without much rain, however.

In Italy, August continued the July nightmare: unbearable temperatures and extreme weather. By the way: what a shock and pain to hear about what happened in Tibet! I had never heard of such a phenomenon. The beautiful Italian city of Cremona was also hit hard by hail.

We’re just destroying the planet… And what are certain governments worried about? Electoral law?

The days have visibly shortened here in the north. The “nights without night” are over: now darkness arrives at 10:00 PM. We’ve even seen some stars in the sky these past few nights: it had been a long time since we last saw them.

Actually, at mid-month, some night owls even saw the Northern Lights! Someone who was out or awake at 3:00 AM.

Another phenomenon I saw a few evenings in the garden as darkness fell was the flight of a couple of Bats. I knew there are Bats in Finland and had glimpsed them, but last week I got a good look at them: with their stubby little wings and their flickering flight. My neighbor even told me where they spend the long winter hibernating: for example, in the disused warehouse of her beach house!

Migratory birds are gradually gathering in groups to prepare for their departure. Who knows if their broods have fared well, in this slightly cooler-than-usual summer, during which we’ve also had fewer mosquitoes than usual. Last week I photographed a large flock of Cranes on the ground, clearing a freshly harvested field of the remaining seeds.

August here in the north is harvest time, especially for grains. For potatoes, carrots, and the like, we must wait until September.

The berry season has been very rich. I myself have spent a lot of time in the woods picking raspberries and blueberries and making jams. Our plum trees have also been generous this year, providing us with a wealth of them. As for mushrooms, the woods are literally littered with yellow chanterelles, while I haven’t yet found any porcini mushrooms, except for one small, skinny one. I’m waiting for the next rains: the woods are quite dry now.

School has already started, the next break will be in mid-October.

Among the news of the month: on the border between Finland and Sweden, on the Tornio River, a natural passage has been reactivated, allowing salmon to pass. The passage had been closed for years due to the presence of a hydroelectric plant. The fact that the salmon were not crossing was unnatural, and it has finally been addressed.

Speaking of animals again, this time domestic, a law has just been passed requiring anyone who keeps a donkey to keep at least two: it has been observed that donkeys suffer too much from loneliness.

In various parts of Finland, barriers or artificial dams that were used to control the height of lake waters are being removed. The pre-existing conditions are being reconstructed, eliminating the unnatural structures.

At the European Athletics Championships recently held in Birmingham, Finland’s Kosonen and Vainio (both girls) won gold medals in the hammer throw and marathon, respectively.

The Italian newspaper “Avvenire, ” the newspaper of the Bishops’ Conference of Italy, has proposed the Nobel Peace Prize to the children of Gaza. Highly deserved.
