Si tratta dei Ciuffolotti (Pyrrhula pyrrhula),  uccellini selvatici diffusi in area paleartica e decisamente stanziali,  salvo qualche spostamento stagionale all’interno del proprio areale.

I Ciuffolotti sono caratterizzati dal corpo tozzo e dal grosso becco,  ma anche dai colori splendenti del maschio,  col suo bel petto arancione,  mentre la femmina e’ elegantissima in grigio.  Lunghi circa 15cm e del peso di circa 30 grammi,  i Ciuffolotti si nutrono di semi e grani che trovano nei boschi dove vivono:  con il becco robusto sono in grado di frantumare qualsiasi involucro.

I Ciuffolotti sono monogami e un tratto caratteristico del loro comportamento e’ il muoversi sempre in coppia,  raramente in stormo.  Nelle mie foto li vedete nostri ospiti alle mangiatoie in un bel giorno d’inverno.

In finnico si chiamano:  Punatulkku.

A Pretty Couple.

Today we will talk about Bullfinches (Pyrrhula pyrrhula),  wild birds widespread in the Palearctic area and decidedly sedentary,  except for some seasonal movements within their range.

Bullfinches are characterized by their stocky body and large beak,  but also by the bright colors of the male,  with his beautiful red-orange chest,  while the female is very elegant in gray.  About 15 cm long and weighing about 30 grams,  Bullfinches feed on seeds and grains that they find in the woodlands where they live:  with their strong beak they are able to open any shell.

Bullfinches are monogamous and a characteristic trait of their behavior is that they always move in pairs,  rarely in flocks.  In my photos you can see them as our guests at the feeders on a beautiful winter day.

In Finnish their name is:  Punatulkku.
