Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Luglio si e’ presentato come giugno,  in Finlandia,  cioe’ carico di promesse di pioggia e troppo fresco.  Ma passata la prima settimana (la coda di giugno) e’ esplosa l’estate.  Quella bella,  quella piacevole.  Quella che piace a me in primis che sono abituata ai climi caldi.  L’estate che desideriamo tutti,  in fondo:  fino a 28/30 gradi C il pomeriggio e 15/18 C la notte,  giusto per respirare un po’.  Cosi’ va bene.  Cio’ che faccio fatica a credere tutti gli anni e’ quanto velocemente si surriscaldano le nostre case,  che sono fatte di legno dentro e fuori.  

Solo in alcune localita’ del Paese siamo arrivati a 30 gradi C o poco oltre,  eppure il record di giornate consecutive sopra i 30 gradi e’ stato superato:  quest’anno sono state 14,  l’anno scorso 13.

In Italia abbiamo avuto invece il caldo eccessivo,  quello che fa ansimare,  che fa sudare in continuazione e che fa sentire sempre appiccicaticci.  Era iniziato a meta’ giugno ed e’ proseguito per buona parte di luglio.  Quando e’ stato interrotto,  e’ stato rimpiazzato da forti temporali che hanno provocato anche frane e smottamenti,  oltre che locali allagamenti.

Data la mala parata di inizio mese,  cominciavo gia’ a preoccuparmi per il nostro orto ed in particolare per le fragole.  Pensavo che,  troppo annacquate,  non fruttificassero e invece e’ andata bene e il raccolto e’ stato abbondante.  E’ successo anche ad alcuni fiori:  ad esempio le Juhannusruusu,  le Rose di San Giovanni:  sono sfiorite a tempo di record a causa della troppa pioggia.  In genere le nostre fragole sono piccolette,  ma talvolta qualcuna di piu’ grossa si trova;  recentemente ne ho trovato una gigantesca:  pesava 47 grammi!

Anche quest’anno come l’anno scorso una simpatica leprotta ci ha mangiato l’insalata.  L’anno scorso si e’ trattato di una giovane lepre,  per cui l’ha mangiata a poco a poco e appena ce ne siamo accorti abbiamo messo una rete di protezione;  mentre quest’anno si e’ trattato di una lepre adulta,  forse un grosso maschio (lo abbiamo visto) e in una notte ci ha sciato solo i torsoli.  L’insalata non era molta,  ma deve comunque essergli piaciuta.  L’anno prossimo si va di rete subito,  senza fidarsi delle lepri…  Non era mai successo negli anni precedenti.  La lepre e’ simpatica senz’altro,  ma nei boschi e nei campi trova nutrimento a sufficienza in estate.

Mia cognata I. e’ una provetta giardiniera e ortolana e quest’anno ci ha date due piante di pomodori gia’ fiorite,  che abbiamo piantato immediatamente e che accudiamo con devozione.  A inizio mese ero dubbiosa,  ma adesso i pomodori sono gia’ grossetti:  vediamo quando maturano.  Sarebbero i nostri primi pomodori.  In Finlandia i pomodori vanno seminati in casa a fine inverno e poi trasferiti in serra;  solo in piena estate possono stare all’aperto.

Fra le notizie del mese,  anche in Finlandia,  come in Italia,  tengono le prime pagine dei giornali le giravolte del presidente Trump riguardo ai temi piu’ scottanti:  le guerre,  inclusa quella commerciale.  Anche qui c’e’ molta motivata irritazione per le sue parole ingiuste contro l’Unione Europea,  che e’ sempre stata un formidabile ed affidabile alleato.  Fa impressione come l’ordine mondiale,  le istituzioni internazionali,  gli sforzi compiuti dalla comunita’ per darsi delle regole vengano adesso scardinati da dittatori e autocrati.

Fra le notizie che hanno fatto piu’ impressione a me personalmente,  ne cito due.  La prima:  una influencer che per farsi un selfie e’ precipitata dentro il cratere di un vulcano spento in Indonesia.  Purtroppo i soccorsi sono stati complicati e la donna e’ stata trovata morta.  La riflessione che faccio io e’ la seguente:  non e’ sufficiente fotografare il vulcano da lontano e postarlo cosi’?  Occorre andare vicino e farsi un selfie?  I tuoi followers non credono che sei stata in quel luogo se non pubblichi anche la tua faccia?

La seconda notizia che mi ha lasciata sconcertata e’ quella di un motociclista italiano in Romania che,  avendo avvistato un’orsa con i cuccioli,  si e’ fermato a farsi un selfie approfittando del fatto che l’orsa si stava avvicinando.  Ovviamente l’orsa si e’ comportata da orsa e da madre:  spaventata per i cuccioli ha aggredito e ucciso l’umano.  Vorrei veramente raccomandare a tutti di non dare alcuna confidenza agli animali selvatici,  anche piccoli,  specialmente quando hanno i cuccioli,  poiche’ appunto sono animali e non sappiamo le loro reazioni.  Perfino i piccoli uccellini vi aggrediranno se vi avvicinate al nido,  perfino il gatto di casa soffia se gli toccate i piccoli…  Inoltre l’orsa sa che anche un orso maschio puo’ avventarsi contro i suoi piccoli e sbranarli,  per cui e’ pronta a combattere anche contro un essere piu’ grande di lei.

A Month in My Photos.

July felt like June in Finland,  full of promises of rain and too cool.  But after the first week (the tail end of June),  summer burst out.  The beautiful,  pleasant kind of summer.  The kind I like,  especially since I’m used to warm climates.  The summer we all long for,  after all:  up to 28-30 degrees C in the afternoon and 15-18 degrees C at night,  just enough to breathe a little.  That’s fine.  What I find hard to believe every year is how quickly our homes,  made of wood inside and out,  overheat. 

Only in a few places in the country did we reach 30 degrees C or slightly above,  yet the record for consecutive days above 30 degrees has been broken:  this year there were 14,  last year 13.

In Italy we had excessive heat,  the kind that makes you pant,  that makes you sweat constantly,  and that makes you feel constantly sticky.  It began in mid-June and continued for much of July.  When it was interrupted,  it was replaced by strong thunderstorms that also caused landslides and mudslides,  as well as local flooding. 

Given the bad situation at the beginning of the month,  I was already starting to worry about our garden,  especially for the strawberries.  I thought that,  having been overwatered,  they wouldn’t bear fruit,  but instead things went well and the harvest was abundant.  It also happened to some flowers:  for example,  the Juhannusruusu,  the St. John’s Rose:  they withered in record time due to too much rain.  Usually our strawberries are small,  but sometimes I find a bigger one;  recently I found a gigantic one:  it weighed 47 grams!

This year,  as well as last year,  a cute hare ate our lettuce.  Last year it was a young hare,  so it ate it little by little,  and as soon as we noticed,  we put up a safety net.  This year it was an adult hare,  perhaps a large male (we saw him),  and in one night he ate it up to the cores.  We did not have so much lettuce,  but it must have liked it anyway.  Next year,  we’ll put the safety net right away,  without trusting the hares… It had never happened in previous years.  The hare is certainly a cute critter but it finds plenty of food in the woods and fields in the summer. 

My sister-in-law I. is an expert gardener and vegetable grower and this year she gave us two tomato plants that have already flowered,  which we planted immediately and which we are caring for with devotion.  At the beginning of the month I was skeptical,  but now the tomatoes are already quite large:  let’s see when they ripen.  They would be our first tomatoes.  In Finland  tomatoes are sown indoors in late winter and then moved to a greenhouse;  only in midsummer can they be grown outdoors. 

Among the headlines of the month,  in Finland as in Italy,  President Trump’s about-faces on the top important issues are making the headlines.  Especially on wars,  including trade wars.  Also in Finland there is much justified irritation over his unjust words against the European Union,  which has always been a formidable and reliable ally.  It is shocking how the world order,  the international institutions,  and the community’s efforts to establish rules for itself are now being undermined by dictators and autocrats.

Among the news that have made the greatest impact on me personally,  I’ll mention two.  The first:  a social media influencer fell into the crater of an extinct volcano in Indonesia while taking  a selfie.  Unfortunately,  the rescue efforts were complicated and the woman was found dead.  My reflection is this:  isn’t it enough to photograph the volcano from afar and post it like that?  Is it necessary to get up close and take a selfie?  Don’t your followers believe you’ve been there if you don’t post your face too?

The second news that left me shocked is about an Italian motorcyclist in Romania who,  having spotted a bear with cubs,  stopped to take a selfie,  taking advantage of the fact that the bear was approaching.  Obviously,  the bear behaved like a bear and a mother:  frightened for her cubs,  she attacked and killed the human.  I would really advise everyone not to give any intimacy to wild animals,  even small ones,  especially when they have cubs,  because they are animals and it is unpredictable how they will react.  Even small birds will attack you if you approach their nest,  even the house cat will hiss if you touch its cubs… Furthermore,  the female bear knows that even a male bear can pounce on her cubs and tear them to pieces,  so she is ready to fight even against somebody larger than herself.
