Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Febbraio e’ stato ancora una volta alternativamente freddo e tiepido:  nonostante le ricorrenti nevicate,  le temperature oscillanti tra sottozero e sopra zero non sono riuscite a mantenere il bianco manto e la neve si e’ ricorrentemente sciolta,  causando giornate ricche di umidita’ e nebbia.  Anche gli sciatori quest’anno sono stati delusi:  e’ stato possibile mantenere qualche pista in buone condizioni solo pochi giorni,  qui nella Finlandia meridionale,  mentre per fortuna andando verso nord tutto migliorava:  l’inverno manteneva le proprie caratteristiche e in particolare in Lapponia la stagione turistica si e’ salvata.

A Verona Febbraio e’ stato davvero umido e nebbioso.  Pur essendo il termometro permanentemente sopra zero,  l’umidita’ in inverno e’ talmente fastidiosa da far sembrare molto piu’ freddo l’ambiente.  E’ una caratteristica dell’inverno della Pianura Padana.  In altre zone d’Italia ovviamente la situazione e’ diversa,  ma io vi parlo di cio’ che conosco bene.

A febbraio in Finlandia scade la “hiihtoloma”,  una delle settimane di vacanza scolastica tra l’anno.  Come forse ricordate,  qui le scuole iniziano verso meta’ agosto e si concludono a fine maggio,  per cui ci sono un paio di settimane di vacanza aggiuntive rispetto a quelle che abbiamo nelle scuole in Italia.  La prima si ha ad ottobre e la seconda a febbraio,  che insieme alle vacanze natalizie e pasquali fanno un bel monte ore.

Essendo la Finlandia un Paese organizzato,  e’ stato diviso il territorio nazionale in tre zone maggiori e queste settimane di vacanze scadono in periodi diversi nelle tre zone:  nella zona meridionale dove ci troviamo,  la hiihtoloma e’ stata la settimana scorsa,  dal 17 al 23 febbraio;  nella zona nord sara’ il prossimo 3-9 marzo;  nella Finlandia centrale e’ nella settimana in corso.   Questa divisione in periodi e zone e’ stata pensata per evitare il disagio che vi siano troppe persone in giro nello stesso momento per le strade,  nei centri commerciali,  nei centri sportivi,  nelle localita’ sciistiche,  negli aeroporti e stazioni.  Comprensibilmente,  si vuole evitare che vi siano gli intasamenti che puntualmente avvengono a Natale,  quando gran parte della popolazione si mette in movimento all’unisono.

Hiihtoloma significa:  vacanza sciistica,  o “settimana bianca”,  come diciamo noi italiani e si riferisce allo sport piu’ praticato in inverno da grandi e bambini.  Il turismo interno e’ molto importante:  le famiglie che si recano al nord per sciare sono un grande introito nell’industria turistica finlandese.  Questa vacanza a meta’ inverno e’ stata istituita anche per dare la possibilita’ ai ragazzi di stare maggiormente all’aperto e alla luce.

Le giornate si sono allungate moltissimo e adesso il buio non arriva prima delle 18.00.  La natura ovviamente dorme ancora,  ma qualche Cinciallegra ha iniziato a cantare,  nelle giornate soleggiate,  invitata dalla crescente luce.

Chi si e’ svegliato,  invece,  sono gli orsi bruni dello zoo di Korkeasaari,  a Helsinki.  Che ci crediate o no,  e’ una notizia che trova spazio sui giornali e nei telegiornali:  la natura trova sempre ampio spazio nei media finlandesi.

D’altra parte,  non dovendo occuparsi cosi’ tanto di faccende di mafia,  di evasione,  di malversazioni varie…i giornalisti trovano il tempo di parlare di ambiente e di natura.  Questo e’ anche un fatto che contribuisce a fare della Finlandia un Paese felice.

Per la verita’,  i giornalisti qui si occupano molto di piu’ di politica estera,  di quanto non facciano quelli italiani.  Mentre in Italia si dibatte per lo piu’ di cose che riguardano gli affari interni,  qui lo sguardo spazia all’Europa e al mondo.  Per esempio le notizie di questo periodo riguardano i retroscena dei presunti negoziati di pace tra Russia e Ucraina.  Anche qui il polverone alzato dal neo-presidente americano che discute con Putin sulla testa dell’Ucraina senza l’Ucraina ha destato stupore e sconcerto.  Addirittura le aperture eccessive fatte nei confronti di Putin e quel concedergli cosi’ tanto,  ha alquanto allarmato:  se si avalla l’invasione di uno stato sovrano in barba ai regolamenti internazionali,  nessuno stato sara’ piu’ al sicuro.  Se si riabilita Putin e lo si rende un vincente,  allora non solo lui ma chiunque si sentira’ autorizzato a prendersi cio’ che vuole.  Giustizia vorrebbe che questa guerra finisse con garanzie permanenti per l’Ucraina ma anche per tutti quei Paesi che temono di essere i prossimi sulla lista imperialista di Putin,  a cominciare dai Baltici,  i piu’ indifesi.

A Month in my Photos.

February was once again alternately cold and warm:  despite the recurring snowfalls,  temperatures oscillating between below zero and above zero were unable to maintain the snow and it repeatedly melted,  causing days full of humidity and fog.  Skiers were also disappointed this year:  it was possible to keep some slopes in good condition only for a few days,  here in southern Finland,  while fortunately going north everything improved:  the winter maintained its characteristics and in particular in Lapland the tourist season was saved. 

In Verona February was really humid and foggy.  Even though the thermometer is permanently above zero,  the humidity in winter is so annoying that it makes the environment feel much colder.  It is a characteristic of the winter of the Po Valley.  In other areas of Italy obviously the situation is different,  but I am now dealing with what I know well. 

In Finland,  the “hiihtoloma”,  one of the school holidays of the year,  takes place in February.  As you may remember,  here schools start around mid-August and finish at the end of May,  so there are a couple of weeks’ holidays in addition to those we have in schools in Italy.  The first one is in October and the second one is in February,  which together with the Christmas and Easter holidays make up a nice amount of hours.

Since Finland is a well organized country,  the national territory has been divided into three major zones and these weeks’ holidays take place at different times in the three zones:  in the southern zone where we are,  the hiihtoloma was last week,  from February 17th to 23rd;  in the northern zone it will be next March 3rd-9th;  in central Finland it is in the current week.  This division into periods and zones was designed to avoid the inconvenience of too many people being around at the same time on the streets,  in shopping malls,  in sports centers,  in ski resorts,  in airports and stations.  Understandably,  the aim is to avoid the traffic jams that regularly occur at Christmas,  when a large part of the population gets moving in unison. 

Hiihtoloma means:  ski vacation,  or “white week”,  as we Italians say and refers to the most popular sport in winter for adults and children.  Domestic tourism is very important:  families who go to the north to ski are a big source of income for the Finnish tourism industry.  This mid-winter holiday was also established to give children the opportunity to spend more time outdoors and in the light.

The days have become much longer and now it doesn’t get dark until 6 pm.  Nature is still asleep,  of course,  but some Great Tits have started to sing,  on sunny days,  invited by the increasing light hours.

Those who have woken up,  however,  are the Brown bears at the Korkeasaari Zoo in Helsinki.  Believe it or not,  this is news that finds space in newspapers and on TV news:  nature always finds ample space in the Finnish media.  On the other hand,  since they don’t have to deal so much with mafia affairs,  with corruption… journalists find time to talk about the environment and nature.  This is a fact which contributes to make Finland a happy country.

Actually,  journalists here deal much more with foreign policy than Italian journalists do.  While in Italy the debates mostly concern internal affairs,  here attention goes to Europe and the world.  For example,  the news now concerns the background of the alleged peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.  Here too,  the fuss raised by the new American president who is talking with Putin over the head of Ukraine without Ukraine has caused astonishment and dismay.  Even the excessive openings made towards Putin and the concessions made to him have caused quite alarm:  if the invasion of a sovereign state is endorsed in defiance of international regulations,  no state will be safe anymore.  If Putin,  is rehabilitated and made a winner,  then not only he but anyone else will feel authorized to take what they want.  This war should end justly with permanent peace guarantees for Ukraine as well as for all those countries that fear being next on Putin’s imperialist list,  starting with the Baltics,  the most defenseless.
