Tra Italia e Finlandia

Questo uccellino piccolissimo  si chiama Regolo comune (Regulus regulus);  in finlandese:  Hippiäinen. 

Con i suoi 7 grammi di peso,  è uno dei più piccoli uccelli esistenti in Europa.  Vive in tutta la zona paleartica del nostro pianeta ed è un migratore,  per cui in estate se ne sta in Finlandia,  ad esempio,  e in inverno si sposta a sud per svernare.  Io però nei boschi attorno a casa a Somero l’ho visto più di qualche volta in inverno e sicuramente sentito,  poichè il suo richiamo è lieve ma molto chiaro:  vuol dire che qualche gruppetto resta coraggiosamente qui.

L’esemplare nelle mie foto però l’ho fotografato in un parco cittadino in provincia di Verona a dicembre.

Fra le caratteristiche uniche di questa piccola meraviglia,  c’è prima di tutto il piumaggio:  un bel verde oliva intervallato da grigio e striature gialle e nere molto chiare,  specie su testa ed ali.

Poi viene la velocità,  o meglio il movimento continuo:  questo piccolo esserino sfuggente non sta mai fermo per lungo tempo su un posatoio,  ma si muove in continuazione,  rendendo difficile il piacere di fargli una bella foto.

Infine:  lo spostarsi in piccoli gruppi seguendo un leader che lancia un richiamo ben preciso,  un chiaro trillo ripetuto ogni pochi secondi,  che ormai mi è famigliare.

This very small bird is called Goldcrest (Regulus regulus);  in Finnish:  Hippiäinen.

With its weight of just 7 grams,  it is one of the smallest birds in Europe.  It lives throughout the Palearctic area of our planet and is a migrant,  so in the summer it stays in Finland, for example,  and in the winter it moves south.

To tell the truth I have seen it a few times in the woodlands around my house in Somero in winter too and certainly heard it,  as its call is soft but very clear.  This means that some individuals/groups stay here.

However,  the specimen in my photos was photographed in a city park near Verona in December.

Among the unique characteristics of this little wonder,  first of all is the plumage:  a beautiful olive green interspersed with gray and very clear yellow and black streaks,  especially on the head and wings.

Then comes the speed,  or rather the continuous movement:  this little elusive creature never stays still for a long time on a perch,  but moves continuously,  making it difficult to have the pleasure of taking a nice photo of it;  in this last shot of mine you can already see it changing place.

Finally:  moving in small groups following a leader who gives a very specific call,  a clear trill repeated every few seconds,  which is now familiar to me.  This bird is monogamous.

A FUN FACT:   in English, this bird belongs to the Kinglet family,  hence the title of the post.
