Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Dicembre in Finlandia e’ stato molto bello perche’ e’ stato “correttamente” nevoso.  Mi spiego:  solitamente abbiamo nevicate sporadiche che pero’ si alternano con le piogge,  le temperature scendono ma poi risalgono,  per cui la neve non e’ stabile.  Quest’anno invece abbiamo avuto neve permanente da meta’ novembre.  Non solo:  e’ stata neve soffice e leggera,  non piena d’acqua,  di quella neve che a camminarci sopra fa “scronch” ed e’ un piacere sentirlo,  proprio perche’ le temperature si sono mantenute sotto lo zero.  Infine,  non fa fatto nemmeno troppo freddo.  Per cui e’ stato un dicembre fortunato.

La novita’ e’ stata che avendo i solerti volontari dello sci club locale gia’ battuto le piste,  abbiamo fatto le prime sciate.  Grazie davvero al loro lavoro.

Ovviamente adesso la durata delle ore di luce ha toccato il minimo,  ma dal solstizio e’ iniziato di nuovo l’allungamento.  😉

Va detto che le lunghe ore di buio invernale,  unite al freddo,  provocano nella gente il desiderio di andare in letargo.  So bene che quando sui giornali si parla del nord Europa si citano sempre le statistiche dei suicidi e se ne addossa la colpa al buio,  ma non e’ proprio cosi’.  O meglio:  cio’ che puo’ scatenare la depressione e l’istinto al suicidio e’ una serie di fattori sociali,  famigliari,  religiosi,  di stile di vita,  di proprio vissuto,  di capacita’ di comunicare,  di distanze anche fisiche fra individui,  di carattere,  di solitudine…insomma le giornate corte non sono certo il primo fattore scatenante.  Per fattore religioso in particolare intendo la seguente cosa:  qui la religione non e’ seguita come puo’ esserlo in Italia e la fede profonda,  quella che salva la vita,  non e’ di tutti,  per cui viene a mancare quello che puo’ essere un deterrente.

Tornando ad argomenti piu’ leggeri,  vi racconto che adesso davvero TUTTI i migratori se ne sono andati:  gli ultimi come sempre sono i cigni,  che aspettano proprio fino a quando i laghi gli si gelano sotto la coda.  Solo gli uccellini stanziali sono rimasti e noi li accogliamo con gioia alle nostre mangiatoie,  come ogni inverno.

Per la verita’,  adesso e’ proprio difficile scorgere gli animali selvatici,  perche’ se ne stanno raggruppati e rintanati nel folto dei boschi al riparo.  Cio’ non toglie che quando si fanno camminate ci si accorga che sono comunque sempre con noi:  non solo cervi e caprioli o lepri e volpi,  ma anche i piccoli come le donnole,  gli ermellini,  le martore,  i topi di campagna,  le arvicole e naturalmente qualche rapace che li preda.

Fra gli avvenimenti che mi preme raccontarvi c’e’ anche il fatto che la rassegna tutta veronese chiamata “Tocati'” e’ stata dichiarata Patrimonio immateriale dell’Umanita’ dall’UNESCO.  Si tratta di una tre-giorni di antichi giochi di strada che si svolge ogni settembre per le vie di Verona:  le strade principali vengono chiuse e tutta la cittadinanza partecipa giocando a “Campana” o “Palla prigioniera”… Quest’anno e’ stato il ventennale di questa manifestazione e il tentativo e’ quello di salveguardare la cultura e la socialita’ legata al mondo dei giochi.

Fra le curiosita’ di costume che ho sentito in tv questo mese,  spicca senz’altro la vicenda del ministro della Difesa finlandese,  il quale si e’ preso tre mesi di licenza di maternita’ per accudire l’ultimo figlio e permettere alla moglie di tornare al lavoro.  Naturalmente e’ stato sostituito prontamente da un altro ministro pro tempore.

Un’altra regola che in Finlandia esiste praticamente da sempre e’ che l’ammontare delle multe che si prendono nel traffico viene determinato in base al reddito.  Sembra che qualche politico italiano l’abbia scoperto di recente e lo stia proponendo.  Sarebbe auspicabile.  Ma il problema di fondo da correggere e’ sempre l’evasione fiscale,  altrimenti… Per la cronaca:  il contante e’ praticamente scomparso da queste parti e anche i bancomat stanno diventando sempre piu’ rari.

Parlando dei politici italiani invece,  mi ha fatto bonariamente  sorridere l’iniziativa intrapresa da alcuni di voler assolutamente eliminare i termini inglesi dal Parlamento italiano,  in virtu’ di un vago orgoglio patrio.  Non sara’ difficile:  e’ talmente basso il livello di conoscenza delle lingue straniere in taluni ambiti…

Sempre parlando di politici per lo piu’ italiani,  devo ammettere che del Qatar-gate,  il giro di mazzette che ha coinvolto (pare) rappresentanti del Parlamento Europeo,  oltre al senso di ripugnanza,  mi ha dato fastidio che ci siano di mezzo degli italiani.  Questo non depone certo a favore della nostra reputazione.  Inoltre offende tutti gli italiani onesti che si alzano quotidianamente per andare a fare un lavoro onesto e pagano le tasse.

La guerra non accenna a placarsi e il tavolo delle trattative piange sul serio.  La percezione del conflitto varia a seconda di dove ci troviamo,  ma il punto di vista della Finlandia e dei Paesi Baltici e’ sempre lo stesso:  evitare di essere i prossimi.  In questo l’urgenza di entrare nella NATO.

Il covid non fa piu’ paura in Finlandia e gli organi responsabili rassicurano la popolazione (vaccinata nella quasi assoluta totalita’) derubricandolo a comune influenza.  Ora il covid fa paura alla Cina.  Speriamo che non arrivi da la’ l’ennesima versione del virus riveduta e corretta,  perche’ saremmo stufi.  Arci.

A Month in my Photos.

December in Finland was very nice because it was “correctly” snowy.  Let me explain:  we usually have alternatively snowfalls and rain,  temperatures drop but then rise again,  so the snow is not stable.  This year however we have had permanent snow since mid-November.  Not only that:  it was soft and light snow,  not full of water,  that snow that makes an agreeable noise when you walk on it and it is a pleasure to hear it,  precisely because the temperatures remained below zero.  Finally,  it was not even too cold.  So it was a lucky December.

The news was that since the diligent volunteers of the local ski club had already hit the slopes,  we made our first ski runs. Thanks  so much for their work!

Obviously now the duration of the hours of light has reached a minimum,  but since the solstice the lengthening has begun again. 😉

I must admit that the long hours of winter darkness,  combined with the cold,  make people want to go into hibernation.  I’m well aware that when suicide statistics in Northern Europe are mentioned in the newspapers,  the blame is mostly put on the darkness,  but that’s not really the case.  Or rather:  what can trigger depression and the instinct to commit suicide is a series of reasons:  social,  familiar,  religious,  lifestyle,  personal experience,  together with the ability to communicate,  even physical distances between individuals,  character,  perception of loneliness… in short,  short days are certainly not the first triggering factor.  By religious factor in particular I mean the following thing:  here religion is gemerally not followed as it can be in Italy and deep faith,  the one that saves one’s life,  does not belong to everyone,  so neither that can be a deterrent.

Going back to easier topics,  I’ll tell you that now ALL the migratory birds are really gone:  the last ones,  as always,  are the swans,  who wait just until lakes freeze under their tails.  Only the sedentary birds have remained and we welcome them with joy to our feeders,  like every winter.

Actually now it’s really difficult to see wild animals,  because they are grouped together and well hidden in the thick of the woodlands in shelter.  Nonetheless,  when we go for walks,  we realize that they are always with us:  not only deer and roe deer or hares and foxes,  but also the little ones such as weasels,  stoats,  martens,  field mice,  voles and of course some birds of prey that prey on them.

Among the news that I would like to tell you about there is also the fact that the all-Veronese festival called “Tocati'” has been declared an intangible heritage of humanity by UNESCO.  It is a three-day event of ancient street games that takes place every September in the streets of Verona:  the main roads are closed and all citizens participate by playing old-style games… This year was the twentieth edition of this event.  The aim is to safeguard the culture and sociality linked to the world of games.

Among the news regarding public people that I heard on TV this month:  the Finnish Defense Minister took three months of maternity leave to look after his little child and allow his wife to go back to work.  Naturally he was promptly replaced by another pro tempore minister.

A rule that has practically always existed in Finland is that the amount of fines you get in traffic is determined on the basis of your income.  It seems that some Italian politician has recently discovered it and is proposing it.  It would be desirable.  But the basic problem to be corrected is always tax evasion,  otherwise… 

Cash payments are rarer and rarer here,  as are cash dispensers.

Talking about Italian politicians,  I have to admit that about the Qatar-gate,  the corruption story involving (apparently) representatives of the European Parliament,  I feel angry and disappointed knowing that there are Italians involved.  This certainly does not makes good to our reputation abroad.  It also offends all honest Italians who get up every day to go and work honestly and pay taxes.

The war in Ukraine shows no signs of subsiding and the negotiating table is not held.  The perception of the conflict varies depending on where we are,  but the point of view of Finland and the Baltic countries is always the same:  avoid being the next invaded.  In this their urgency of joining NATO.

Coronavirus is no longer scary and the public health responsibles reassure the population (almost entirely vaccinated) by declassifying it as a common flu.  Now covid scares China.  Let’s hope that yet another revised and corrected version of the virus doesn’t come from there again,  because we’d be fed up. Very.
