Kultaranta e’ il nome della residenza estiva del Presidente della Repubblica finlandese ed e’ il palazzo che vedete nella foto sopra.

Il nome significa:  Riva dorata (dove “kulta” significa “oro”),  e trovandosi nell’estremo sud del Paese,  proprio di fronte alla pittoresca Naantali,  e’ facile intuire come sia un luogo molto soleggiato.

Si tratta di un massiccio edificio in granito locale,  costruito nel 1914 dall’allora proprietario,  il businessman Alfred Kordelin,  alla cui morte passo’ alla Presidenza della Repubblica a partire dal 1922 .

La residenza in se’ non e’ visitabile,  ma lo sono in parte i 16 ettari di giardini che la circondano e sono questi che vi propongo in questo post.

Questi giardini sono stati progettati da Svante e Paul Olsson,  giardinieri ufficilai del tempo e sono un variegato insieme di alberi secolari,  porzioni di foresta,  cespugli e siepi ben modellate,  aiuole,  composizioni floreali,  padiglioni in stile neoclassico.

111 (10)111 (11)111 (12)111 (15)La residenza vera e propria e’ solo parzialmente visibile dai giardini,  soprattutto la torre principale.  Se ne percepisce pero’ tutta la massiccia robustezza dagli enormi blocchi di granito utilizzati per la costruzione.

Nei giardini,  infine,  trovano posto anche 1000mq di serre.

Kultaranta  (part 1).

Kultaranta is the name of the summer residence of the President of the Finnish Republic and it is the palace you see in the first photo above.

The name means:  Golden shore (where “kulta” means “gold”),  and being located in the southernmost part of the country,  right in front of picturesque Naantali,  it is easy to understand how it is a very sunny place.

It is a massive building made with local granite,  built in 1914 by the former owner,  businessman Alfred Kordelin.  After his death the property was acquired by the Finnish government,  in 1922. 

The residence itself cannot be visited,  but part of the 16-hectar gardens that surround it are,  and these are what I will share in this post.

Kultaranta gardens were designed by Svante and Paul Olsson,  official gardeners of the time and are a varied ensemble of ancient trees,  woodland patches,  well-trimmed bushes and hedges,  flower beds,  flower arrangements,  neoclassical garden buildings.

The actual residence is only partially visible from the gardens,  especially the main tower.  However,  it is easy to perceive all the massive strength of the huge granite blocks used for the construction.

Finally,  in the gardens there are also 1000sqm of greenhouses.

  29. Outstanding scenery! It would be wonderful to wander around here with my camera.

    I started thinking about how much work is involved in maintaining such a landscape and gardens and am very thankful for my small yard! 🙂
