Il Gheppio (Falco tinninculus), un rapace comunissimo sia in Italia che in Finlandia, ha una particolarita’ stupefacente ed utilissima: riesce a librarsi e mantenersi in aria per diverso tempo, con una modalita’ di volo che e’ stata chiamata “a Spirito Santo”, ricordando le raffigurazioni della bianca colomba nell’iconografia soprattutto cattolica.
Ve ne do’ una dimostrazione nel breve video seguente:
Holy Spirit Position.
The Common Kestrel (Falco tinninculus), is a very common bird of prey both in Italy and in Finland. This bird possesses a very special and useful hunting technique: he will fly into the wind and hover, maintaining position for long time. This style has been called “Holy Spirit position”, as it reminds of how the white dove is depicted, especially in Catholic iconography.

We call the Turm Falke and they are everywhere to find here in German too, often in groups of two or three. I love these small but very impressive birds.

Just 2 weeks ago, I finally photographed my first American Kestrel! It was the absolute worse photo that I ever took because of weather and backlighting and distance. But it was still identifiable. They are fascinating.
