Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Anche Novembre e’ stato tutto sommato piuttosto tiepido,  in Finlandia,  solo in questi ultimi giorni fa piu’ freddo.  Abbiamo avuto temperature sopra le medie del periodo e giornate (o mezze giornate) in cui abbiamo visto il sole:  non e’ poco.  Certo,  abbiamo anche avuto gelate notturne e qualche impolverata di bianco…ma non e’ mai durato a lungo.  A novembre in realta’ sarebbe ora di parlare di neve,  senza meno.

Il freddo comunque e’ secco e pur essendo pungente (specie per il fatto che il corpo non vi e’ ancora abituato),  e’ piu’ corroborante che fastidioso;  non si puo’ paragonare lo stare all’aperto quando piove e siamo sopra gli zero gradi e lo starci col sole sottozero.  Inoltre per me che vado a camminare tutti i giorni,  non c’e paragone fra il calpestare la terra bella soda,  indurita dal gelo,  e il camminare nel fango…

Gli uccelli rimasti sono quelli stanziali.  Solo qualche cigno tardivo e’ stato sorpreso dal ghiacciare dei laghi.  Trovare cibo e’ sempre piu’ dura.

Le giornate si sono accorciate moltissimo:  adesso alle 16.00 il sole e’ gia’ tramontato e il buio avanza inesorabile.  Molte persone non sopportano questa stagione,  nemmeno qui in Finlandia,  naturalmente e fuggono verso i Paesi caldi per una piu’ o meno lunga vacanza.  Novembre e’ il mese in cui solitamente le prenotazioni per i viaggi all’estero sono piu’ numerose.  Virus permettendo,  quest’inverno la gente si e’ spostata e si spostera’ molto piu’ che l’inverno scorso.

A novembre in Finlandia si entra precipitosamente nell’atmosfera natalizia;  come ho detto piu’ volte,  qui Natale e’ sentitissimo,  non necessariamente per il suo carattere di festa religiosa,  ma soprattutto di festa della famiglia,  dello stare insieme,  del rivedere parenti ed amici lontani.  Staremo a vedere cosa ci sara’ consentito di fare quest’anno,  dal momento che anche qui la situazione virus non e’ proprio buona.

Il Natale e’ anticipato da due altre importanti celebrazioni:  la Festa del Papa’ (la seconda domenica di novembre) e il Giorno dell’Indipendenza (il 6 dicembre).  Per cui,  visti anche i lunghi pomeriggi gia’ bui,  in novembre si accendono gia’ parecchi alberi di Natale nei giardini:  fanno molta compagnia quando si e’ per strada e si rincasa tardi.

Cio’ significa che la stagione autunno-inverno e’ la piu’ onerosa in termini di consumi di elettricita’.  Anche perche’ qui tutto e’ elettrico,  dalla sauna ai fornelli:  immaginate l’abissale differenza che c’e’ tra inverno ed estate!  Il gas praticamente non esiste,  a parte qualche zona nel centro di Helsinki e le saune a legna sono certo le preferite,  ma spesso per praticita’ si opta per i modelli elettrici.  Ne consegue che la produzione di elettricita’ e’ essenziale;  qui viene prodotta molto pragmaticamente:  oltre ad impianti idroelettrici,  la Finlandia ha appena ultimato e messo in funzione la quinta centrale nucleare.  Peraltro,  si vedono sempre piu’ pannelli solari ed impianti eolici,  ma va da se’ che il grosso della produzione viene dal nucleare.  Me di questo parleremo in un altro post.

Come detto,  la situazione covid sta peggiorando alla grande anche qui,  perche’ le aperture sono state tantissime e l’alta percentuale di vaccinazioni ha fatto credere che tutto fosse finito.  Il governo e’ molto cauto nell’imporre restrizioni,  ma cerca di accelerare la campagna per le terze dosi.  Alcuni eventi sono stati comunque cancellati,  come il sontuoso ricevimento del presidente della repubblica per il giorno dell’indipendenza.  Vorrei rassicurare i negazionisti che mi leggessero:  anche qui gli ospedali si stanno riempiendo,  anche qui nella terra della liberta’ personale perseguita ad ogni costo esiste il Green pass e viene usato,  anche qui ultimamente la maggior parte dei casi si registra fra i giovanissimi e i bambini.

A questo proposito,  vorrei fare una riflessione. E’ proprio vero quello che ho letto sul Corriere tempo fa:  “Quando la realta’ e’ troppo dura da accettare,  l’uomo inizia a credere al complotto”.  Sta succedendo proprio questo.  Il mondo e’ troppo amareggiato dall’evento pandemico e molti di noi si rifugiano in credenze altrnative,  pur di non perdere la speranza.

Dev’essere proprio cosi’,  altrimenti non si spiegherebbe come tanta gente invece di credere ai medici e alla scienza,  crede ad Enrico Montesano.  Non si spiega come mai gente sana di mente cerchi di contagiarsi pur di non vaccinarsi – finendo poi in ospedale a portar via posti letto preziosi ad altri malati.  Non si spiega neppure come mai tanta gente abbia assunto vaccini anche forti,  magari per viaggiare verso destinazioni pericolose e non ne voglia sapere proprio di questo.  Non si spega come si possano assumere droghe,  ma non il vaccino.  Non si spiega perche’ molta gente accetti di iniettarsi l’inchiostro dei tatuaggi,  ma non il vaccino.

Un caso a parte sono i no-vax per motivi religiosi: pensano che il vaccino sia opera di Satana:  bentornati nel Medioevo!

Vi ricordate quando ci chiedevamo se questa pandemia ci avrebbe reso migliori??

La situazione in Finlandia al momento comunque e’ la seguente:  276,8 casi per 100mila abitanti e 317 ricoverati in ospedale,  che per la media di qui sono tantissimi.  I morti totali sono 1335 da marzo 2020.

In Italia la media nazionale e’ di 244,4 casi per 100mila abitanti,  purtroppo in crescita.

Come sappiamo,  la conferenza sul clima COP 26 e’ finita mestamente senza accordi pregnanti.  Quando ci irritiamo perche’ alcuni Paesi non hanno preso impegni solidi ricordiamoci che gran parte dei beni che producono sono per noi,  perche’ noi glieli abbiamo commissionati.  Ad inizio pandemia,  quando ci siamo scoperti tutti sprovvisti di mascherine,  qui in Finlandia si diceva che sarebbe meglio riportare in Europa la fabbriche delocalizzate,  ma adesso gia’ questo discorso non si sente piu’.

A Month in my Photos.

November was also all in all quite warm in Finland.  We had temperatures above average and days (or half days) in which we saw the sun.  Sure,  we also had frosty nights and some snow dustings … but it did not last for long.  In November it would actually be the time for snow, no doubt.  In these latest days temperatures have dropped,  though.

The cold air is however dry and despite being biting (especially because our body is not yet used to it),  it is more invigorating than annoying;  you cannot compare being outdoors when it rains at above zero degrees and being there in the sun below zero.  I go walking daily and in my opinion there is no comparison stepping on firm,  frost-hardened earth and walking in the mud …

The birds that are here now are the sedentary ones only.  Swans are always the last to go.  From now on it will be harder and harder to find food.

The days have shortened a lot:  now at 4.00 p.m. the sun has already set and the darkness is inexorable. Many people can’t stand this season,  not even here in Finland,  of course and escape to warm countries for a longer or shorter vacation.  November is the month in which reservations for travel abroad are usually more numerous.  If the virus allows,  people have moved this winter and will move much more than last winter.

In November in Finland the Christmas atmosphere is spreading;  as I have said several times,  here Christmas is very heartfelt,  not necessarily for being a religious holiday,  but above all as a celebration of the family,  of being together,  of seeing distant relatives and friends.  We will see what we will be allowed to do this year,  since here too the virus situation is not exactly good.

Christmas is preceded by two other important celebrations:  Father’s Day (on the second Sunday of November) and Independence Day (December 6th).  Therefore,  given the long dark afternoons,  in November several Christmas trees are already lit in gardens:  they keep a lot of company when you are on the road coming home late. 

This means that the autumn-winter season is the most expensive in terms of electricity consumption.  Also because here everything is electric,  from the sauna to the stove:  imagine the huge difference between winter and summer!  Gas is not used,  apart from some areas in the center of Helsinki.  Saunas are often wood fired,  but also electric models are quite popular.  Hence the production of electricity is essential;  here it is produced very pragmatically:  in addition to hydroelectric plants,  Finland has just completed and put into operation the fifth nuclear power plant.  Moreover,  we see more and more solar panels and wind power plants,  but it goes without saying that the major production comes from nuclear power.  We will talk about this in another post.

As mentioned,  the covid situation is getting worse here too,  because there have been so many openings and the high percentage of vaccinations made us believe that everything was over.  The government is very cautious about imposing restrictions,  but tries to speed up the campaign for third doses.  However,  some events were cancelled,  such as the sumptuous celebration given by the President for Independence day.  I would like to reassure the deniers who read me:  even here the hospitals are filling up,  even here in the land of personal freedom pursued at all costs there is the Vax-pass and it is used,  even here lately most of the cases are recorded among the very young and children.

In this regard,  I would like to propose a reflection.  What I read in an Italian newspaper some time ago must be true true:  “When reality is too hard to accept,  man begins to believe in the conspiracy”.  This is exactly what is happening.  The world is too embittered by the pandemic event and many of us take refuge in alternative beliefs,  in order not to lose hope.

It must be so,  otherwise you can’t explain how so many people instead of believing in doctors and science,  believe in science-fiction.  You can’t explain why sane-minded people try to get infected in order not to get vaccinated – and then end up in the hospital and occupy beds which would be necessary to other patients.  You can’t explain why so many people have had even strong vaccines,  perhaps in order to travel to dangerous destinations and do not want to hear about this.  You can’t explain why so many people take drugs,  but not the vaccine.  You can’t explain why some people get the tattoo ink injected willingly,  but not the vaccine.

The category of unbelievers that makes me wonder most is those who do not get the vaccine for religious reasons:  they think it is a work of Satan.  Welcome back to the Middle Ages!

When the pandemic started,  we wondered whether this experience would have made us better humans…

The situation in Finland at the moment,  however,  is the following:  276.8 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants and 317 hospitalized,  which is quite a lot here.  The total deaths have been 1335 since March 2020.

In Italy the national average is 244.4 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants,  unfortunately growing.

As we know,  the COP 26 climate conference ended sadly without meaningful agreements.  When we get irritated because some countries have not made solid commitments,  let’s remember that most of the goods they produce are for us,  because we have requested them to do so.  At the beginning of the pandemic,  when we all found ourselves without masks,  here in Finland it was said it would be better to bring the relocated factories back to Europe:  now this is no longer heard.
