L’uva spina,  (Ribes uva-crispa),  e’ un arbusto perenne a rami intricati e spinosi molto diffuso anche nell’Europa del nord.  Qui in Finlandia e’ presente in molti giardini,  ha l’aspetto di un cespuglio.

I suoi frutti sono bacche molto buone,  nonostante non siano particolarmente dolci.

Come vedete dalle mie foto,  ne esiste una varieta’ bianca ed una rossa. Si chiama “uva” in italiano,  per l’evidente somiglianza con gli acini della vite.  In finnico si chiama:  Karviainen.

Le bacche hanno molte proprieta’,  in particolare forniscono Potassio e Magnesio,  oltre che fibre.

Noi la mangiamo in purezza,  ma talvolta l’ho trasformata in una morbida marmellata:

Gooseberry.

The European Gooseberry,  (Ribes uva-crispa),  is a perennial shrub with intricate and thorny branches very widespread also in northern Europe.  Here in Finland we have it in many gardens,  as it has the appearance of a bush.

Its fruits are very good berries,  although they are not particularly sweet.  As you can see from my photos,  there is a white and a red variety.

It is called “grape” in Italian,  due to the evident resemblance to the grape berries.  Gooseberries have many properties,  in particular they provide Potassium and Magnesium,  as well as fiber.

We eat it alone,  but sometimes I’ve turned it into a soft jam.

In Finnish it is called:  Karviainen.
