Marbella è una splendida cittadina a vocazione essenzialmente turistica,  del sud della Spagna.  Situata nella provincia di Malaga,  in piena regione Andalusia ed essendo parte della cosiddetta Costa del Sol,  Marbella ha tutte le carte in regola per offrire clima mite con una temperatura media annuale di circa 18 gradi C,  anche perchè protetta nella parte nord da una catena montuosa.  A Marbella noi siamo stati in inverno ed è stata una scelta giusta:  abbiamo trovato giornate soleggiate intervallate da qualche acquazzone primaverile.

Facciamo un giro per la città seguendo l’itinerario delle mie foto?  Uno dei luoghi più frequentati del centro storico di Marbella,  il Casco Antiguo,  è senz’altro Plaza de los Naranjos,  non solo per la concentrazione di caffè all’aperto e per l’atmosfera piacevole  creata dai numerosi e profumatissimi alberi di arance con i loro fiori e i loro frutti,  ma anche per gli edifici in stile tardo gotico Castigliano,  dai ricchi decori.  La presenza di turisti è notevole,  in ogni stagione.

A ridosso della piazza si trovano la Cattedrale,  il Municipio e poi un’infinita’ di viuzze con basse case bianche addossate le une alle altre,  ricche di dettagli colorati:  finestre con gelosie possenti;  vasi con vegetazione rigogliosa;  nicchie votive con santi e madonne;  brillanti azulejos:  le piastrelle decorate tipiche di questa parte del mondo.  Per non parlare dei numerosi negozietti,  ristorantini,  ritrovi e divertimenti che fanno la gioia di ogni turista.

Marbella va vissuta e girata a piedi.  Le distanze non sono enormi ed è piacevole camminare nelle viuzze e scoprire quello che offre questa vivace cittadina.  Naturalmente le spiagge sono un punto di forza:  affacciandosi direttamente sulla Costa del Sol,  Marbella vanta molti chilometri di spiaggia con sabbia dorata e un porto turistico ben attrezzato chiamato:  Puerto Banus.

Una vacanza in questa località,  spensierata e ben tenuta,  può davvero essere un piacevole break durante l’inverno.

Curiosità:  ai finlandesi piace molto viaggiare tra novembre e gennaio per sfuggire un po’ al loro buio e lungo inverno.  Le destinazioni più gettonate sono:  le isole Canarie,  Le Azzorre,  Madeira,  il sud della Spagna,  la Thailandia.  Al contrario,  molti rimangono in patria o in Scandinavia in estate,  per esplorarla con trekking e campeggio e per godere della natura rigogliosa e delle giornate interminabili.

Marbella in Winter.          

Marbella is a beautiful town located in the south of Spain,  not far from the city of Malaga,  in the region Andalucia.  Marbella is part of the long Costa del Sol beach area,  therefore it is totally devoted to tourism.  It is the ideal town for a winter holiday,  as it guarantees a daytime average temperature of about 18 degrees C (64 F),  with rare intervals of spring showers,  being protected by a mountain range in the northern part.

We were there in winter too.  Shall we take a walk following my own itinerary? 

Let’s start from the old town,  originally Arabic,  the Casco Antiguo,  which is also the highest part of town.  The most famous square is the Plaza de los Naranjos,  where the many orange trees provide a pleasant shade and perfume the air with their flowers and fruits;   here you will find open air cafès and plenty of tourists too,  but also a few outstanding buildings in the Castilian Reanissance style,  rich in decorations.

Next to this lovely spot,  the Cathedral and the Town Hall are situated,  all at easy walking distance;  as a matter of fact,  Marbella must be explored on foot.  The old town is a concentration of picturesque low attached houses (mostly white) overlooking narrow streets.  A variety of details make the environment colourful:  flowers and plants in vases,  imposing jalousies on the windows,  niches with Saints and shiny azulejos,  the blue tiles characteristic of this corner of the world.  Not to mention the myriad of shops,  restaurants,  cafeterias,  hangouts which make the day of every tourist.

As I said,  Marbella lies in the southern coastline of Spain and boasts many different beaches too,  with golden sand or gravel,  besides a well-equipped marina called:  Puerto Banus.

All in all,  Marbella offers leisure and relaxation as well as nightlife and it is recommendable as a winter holiday site.

A fun fact:   the Finns quite like to travel abroad to escape the long dark winter.  Their favourite destinations are:  Canazy Islands,  Azores,  Madeira,  southern Spain and Thailand.  Whereas they preferably travel throughout their homeland or Scandinavia in summer,  as the long days and the wonderful nature allow trekking and camping.

  45. It’s great that you had such nice sunshine in Marbella in the winter. I once spent three weeks there in January (1963) but it rained nearly every day..
