Il caco,  o cachi, o kaki, o khaki,  o diospiro,  è un frutto dolcissimo e buonissimo di origine asiatica che sopravvive da sempre anche nel dolce clima del bacino del Mediterraneo.  Il suo nome scientifico è:  Dyospiros kaki e il suo colore…non ti sbagli,  è proprio quel particolare colore che contraddistingue alcuni tipi di divise militari.

La pianta del caco ha foglie larghe verdi e lucide;  il frutto matura ad ottobre,  qui nella pianura Padana e rimane sulla pianta fino a novembre inoltrato,  dopo la caduta delle foglie,  creando delle stupende macchie di colore!  Purtroppo in Finlandia il caco arriva solo d’importazione dai Paesi caldi e non sempre la maturazione ha seguito il processo corretto,  per cui può capitare che non sia molto gustoso.

Sono affezionata al caco perche’ fa parte dei miei ricordi d’infanzia:  ne abbiamo sempre avute una o più piante nel nostro orto,  sin dai tempi del mio nonno.  Inoltre il frutto è di una soavità e scioglievolezza incantevoli:  sempre che sia ben maturo…come tutti i frutti.

The Land of Persimmons.        

The persimmon is a lovely and sweet autumn fruit:  its scientific name is:  Dyospiros kaki.  Although it is originally from Asia,  it is successfully cultivated in all the Mediterranean area,  up to the north of Italy.   From the colour of this fruit the word “khaki” has derived,  to designate the beige-brownish colour of some military uniforms.

The plant has large green leaves,  which drop before the fruits are completely ripe, (here in the Po valley in late october)  thus scattering spots of orange colour in the countryside.  Unfortunately this great fruit is imported to Finland and often it can be not so tasty as the maturation process has not occurred naturally during transportation;  in fact the persimmon must be tasted only when fully ripe:  only then it is soft,  tender,  sweet and it just melts in your mouth!

The persimmon is dear to me,  not only for the extraordinary taste of the fruit and the green beauty of the plant,  but because it reminds me of my childhood,  when my grandfather proudly grew it in our orchard.

  1. carissima, hai toccato un mio punto debole, li adoro. Mi sembra che abbiano una simbologia straordinaria, quelle luci calde nell’autunno che lentamente si spoglia, sono frutti meravigliosi, li ho dipinti decine e decine di volte; le tue foto sono bellissime

Anche per me i cachi sono ricordi di infanzia: non li ho mai sopportati! 😂 A scuola ce li facevano raccogliere da sotto l’albero e si squacchiavano tutti, mi facevano impressione e si restava appiccicati. 😅 Però li hai descritti e fotografati così bene che il tuo post mi è piaciuto lo stesso 😂👏

  11. The persimmon is one of my favourite fruits. I have never seen a persimmon tree in nature because they don’t grow in Finland. Uno dei miei frutti preferiti. 💚 Non crescono in Finlandia ma se ne comprano nei negozi 🙂

  22. Interesting post. I have never tasted either. So true: many fruits are imported to Finland raw, then they ripe in thew wholesaler’s huge warehouses. That really spoils the taste.
