La figlia della betulla.

Ecco una delle prime farfalle che appare a primavera in Finlandia e apre la stagione.  In finnico l’hanno chiamata Koivutyttö,  cioe: “la ragazza della betulla”,  perche’ il suo bruco mangia le foglie di questa pianta;  il nome scientifico e’:  Archiearis parthenias e per essere precisi e’ una falena. 

Non e’ appariscente,  ma le ali inferiori sono di un bel colore arancione ed e’ una vera temeraria,  perche’ sfarfalla ad appena 8 gradi C di temperatura!  Solitamente sfarfalla entro il mese di Aprile.  Le foto sono di inizio Aprile 2016,  quando la primavera e’ arrivata un po’ prima rispetto a quest’anno.

Daughter of the Birch.    

I will share with you today images of one of the first butterflies that appears in spring in Finland,  opening the butterfly season.  It is usually on the wing in April,  when the outside temperature is just 8 degrees C:  it is so brave! 

Its name in Finnish is Koivutyttöperhonen,  that is:  “The girl of the birch”,  because its caterpillars eat the leaves of these trees.  Its scientific name is Archiearis parthenias and to be precise,  it is a day-flying moth (Orange underwings).  It may not look so beautiful,  though its lower wings are nicely orange-coloured.  I took these photos at the beginning of April 2016,  when spring arrived earlier than this year!
