Agosto e’ decisamente il mese in cui qui al nord mettiamo un piede dentro l’autunno.

I segnali sono evidenti:  le temperature si sono abbassate nell’ordine dei 20 gradi pomeridiani;  il sole si sta velocemente allontanando dalle nostre zone e le giornate si sono accorciate visibilmente;  le piogge si sono fatte piu’ frequenti e piu’ insistenti;  dulcis in fundo,  anzi amaro per qualcuno,  le scuole sono ricominciate.

Per la vostra curiosita’,  in parte a causa dei cieli nuvolosi,  la prima stella l’ho vista il 28 agosto.

Le piogge dicevo sono arrivate copiose,  dopo oltre un mese di aridita’ e caldo.  Ovviamente le attendevamo perche’ la natura ne aveva molto bisogno:  i boschi erano davvero asciutti e orti e giardini avevano assunto un color marroncino invece del solito verde brillante.  Per fortuna,  nonostante siano state abbondanti,  non sono state violente.  Con le piogge sono arrivati i primi funghi:  abbiamo gustato il primo risotto ai porcini della stagione.

Di contro,  si iniziano a vedere le foglie delle betulle ingiallire;  veramente ne avevamo viste anche a luglio,  ma allora era per la siccita’,  mentre adesso e’ proprio per la stagione…

Io e Risto abbiamo trascorso pomeriggi interi nei boschi a raccogliere mirtilli:  sono bacche preziose per la salute e buonissime;  le trasformero’ non solo in marmellata,  ma li mangeremo caldi col gelato nelle sere invernali.

La situazione covid non e’ buona in questo momento:  abbiamo 154 casi ogni 100mila abitanti (in Italia 148).  Molta gente ha abbandonato le cautele perche’ anche qui siamo stufi,  come dappertutto ovviamente.  La campagna di vaccinazione comunque prosegue e il governo sta occupandosi ora dei giovanissimi,  che sono ora le vittime preferite dell’infezione.  Anche qui ci sono no-vax,  ma non numerosi e non violenti.

Anche qui stanno pensando di imporre il Green Pass per accedere a vari servizi,  ma il dibattito e’ ancora aperto,  poiche’ la Costituzione non prevede casi del genere.

Riguardo ai tristissimi avvenimenti dell’Afghanistan,  la Finlandia ha fatto la propria parte:  ha evacuato l’ambasciata e i collaboratori locali,  in tutto 300 persone.  Ricordo che la Finlandia e’ militarmente neutrale,  quindi partecipa solo a missioni di peacekeepin;  che non e’ parte della NATO e che la popolazione locale e’ di soli 5,5 milioni:  praticamente gli abitanti del Veneto.

Anche questo mese mi sono dedicata alla letteratura giapponese contemporanea.  Ho letto “La cartella del professore” di Kawakami Hiromi;  che ancora una volta mi ha affascinato per la delicatezza di sentimenti.

A Month in my Photos.

August is definitely the month in which here in the north we take a step into autumn.

The signs are clear:  temperatures have dropped to 20 degrees C in the afternoon;  the sun is quickly moving away from our areas and the days have shortened visibly;  the rains have become more frequent and more insistent;  last but not least schools have started again.

If you are curious about it:  I saw the stars for the first time on August 28th,  partly because of the cloudy sky.

As I said,  rain has arrived copious,  after more than a month of draught and hot.  Obviously we were waiting for it because nature needed it a lot:  the woods were really dry and vegetable yards and gardens had taken on a brownish color instead of the usual bright green.  Luckily it did not rain violently,  even though abundantly.  With the rains came the first mushrooms:  we enjoyed the first porcini risotto of the season.

On the other hand,  the birch leaves are getting yellow;  there were actually yellow leaves on trees also in July,  but it was because of the draught then,  whereas now it is just the season…

Risto and I have spent whole afternoons in the forests collecting blueberries:  they are very good and healthy.  I will then transform them into jam or we will taste them hot with a scoop of ice-cream in the months to come.

The covid situation is not good right now:  we have 154 every 100 thousand inhabitants (in Italy 148).  Many people have given up cautions because they are fed up, as everywhere of course.  The vaccination campaign, however, continues and the government is now dealing with the very young (the target of the virus in this moment).  The anti-vax movement exists here too,  but they are not numerous and not violent.

The debate about making the Vaccine certification compulsory to have access to various activities is still going on here in Finland,  because it does not comply with the State Constitution.

Regarding the sad events in Afghanistan,  the Finnish government did what they could:  they evacuated their embassy plus the local cooperators,  300 people totally.  I remind everybody that Finland is neutral,  that it is not part of NATO,  that it operates just in peacekeeping missions.  Finally,  Finland has a population of 5.5 million.

Also this month I have given my reading attention to Japanese contemporary literature.  I read “Strange Weather in Tokyo”,  by Kawakami Hiromi;  a tale of old-fashioned romance.

  2. In contrast to the dry and warm summer, we had to deal with a rather cool summer with a lot of wind and rain. Only an occasional few warmer sunny days. Nature has recovered after the past hot summers, but the rain has also caused a lot of damage (floods that even washed away houses).
    Covid is also still among the people here, especially among the young generations. Despite more easing, the government has adapted. For example, today the children are allowed to go to school without a mouth mask…. wait and see what it gives.
    The situation in Afghanistan is very tense, Belgium has also managed to bring back many compatriots. Now we have to wait and see how the country can find its own healthy balance….
    Here we hope that September will bring a number of beautiful sunny days.

  24. bellissimo questo reportage dalla tua terra finlandese, per un attimo mi sono immerso in quegli scenari, ho sentito il fresco dei boschi e sentito cadere le prime piogge. Bellissimo post!! 👏👏👏👏😉👍👍👍

    ti ringrazio davvero per questi aggiornamenti su di una regione che conosco molto poco, ma che continua ad affascinarmi di conseguenza a ciò che pubblichi.
    Credimi, non sapevo che nell’estremo nord dell’Europa la pandemia fosse un problema, pensavo che da te fosse meno grave che da noi… spero tanto, comunque, che presto tutti si possa raccontare di questi giorni bui come di qualcosa di passato!
