Dear readers,  today we are halfway through the sea voyage from Stockholm to Turku.  Ships usually stop in Marienhamn,  a charming town,  an important port and the capital of the Åland Islands.  This archipelago is an autonomous region of Finland,  but Swedish-speaking.  After stopping to let passengers disembark,  the ship continues its journey.

And so,  upon arriving in Finland,  we find the sea still frozen.

This trip and these photos date back to early April 2013.  On leaving Stockholm,  the sea was already completely clear,  but near Turku,  which is located a little further north,  there is ice.  This is why Finland has 10 icebreakers…

In the following photos:  charming summer villas overlooking the Baltic sea in trendy Ruissalo.

Here we are:  in the port of Turku.

The icing on the cake:  Turku Castle,  the ancient residence of the Swedish kings.

FUN FACT:  A couple of centuries ago,  the castle stood near the sea;  currently,  it is located a few hundred meters from it due to the rise of the land following the end of the last ice age.
