Oggi condivido con voi alcuni scatti offertimi dalla mia fototrappola relativi ad un volatile buffo e simpatico, ancorche’ piuttosto timido e sfuggente: il Picchio nero (Dryocopus martius).

Caratterizzato dal piumaggio nerissimo e dalla crestina rossa fiammante sulla testa, (che nelle femmine e’ piu’ piccola e solamente sul collo) questo picchio e’ diffuso in tutta la regione paleartica aeuroasiatica. In Finlandia vive nelle foreste di conifere fino a ridosso dell’estremo nord. Essendo grande quanto un corvo, questo picchio e’ il piu’ grande presente in Finlandia. Si nutre di insetti che trova martellando gli alberi col suo becco lungo e potente.

In finnico questo animale si chiama: Palokärkki, dove “palo” significa fuoco, incendio; l’allusione e’ alla testa rossa.

Il Palokärkki e’ conosciuto per il suo verso molto particolare: un alto grido che lancia quando vola attraverso o sopra gli alberi. Chi non lo conosce puo’ stupirsi e chiedersi se qualcuno stia per essere torturato…

Today I’m sharing with you some shots from my camera trap of a funny, yet rather shy and elusive, bird: the Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius).

Characterized by its black plumage and a flaming red crest on its head (which in females is smaller and only on the neck), this woodpecker is widespread throughout the Palearctic region of Eurasia. In Finland, it inhabits coniferous forests as far as the far north. Being as large as a crow, this woodpecker is the largest in Finland. It feeds on insects, which it finds by hammering trees with its long, powerful beak.

In Finnish, this animal is called Palokärkki, where “palo” means fire; the reference is to the red head.
