Ekkulla #1.

Ekkulla  #1.

Half-hidden among the tall trees,  not far from the center of Raasepori in southern Finland,  in the bilingual Swedish-speaking area,  lies Ekkulla,  a successful experiment in country living.

Ekkulla is actually the old school of the village of Mustio,  opened in 1903 and closed in 1970.  Since then,  Ekkulla has undergone various transformations:  it has been a meeting room,  a small ethnographic museum, a café and a place where weaving classes were held.  But in 2020 the municipality of Raasepori decided to put it up for sale.

The new buyers of Ekkulla are the young couple Rafael and Ninni Donner,  who have restored the building and transformed it into their home.

We followed all the stages of the restoration from the television series they made themselves,  filming everything,  even their wedding,  which took place in Ekkulla at the end of the restoration.  The series is called “Kaipuu maalle,”  which means “Longing for the Countryside.”  So we were quite curious to visit it,  which we did in July.

Ekkulla is open as a café for a few months in summer.  The decor is country-style,  and the food is prepared by Mrs. Ninni.  Homemade desserts are enjoyable both in the old schoolhouse and in the park.
