Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Luglio e’ stato estremamente variabile,  in Finlandia.  Abbiamo avuto giornate soleggiate alternate a periodi di nuvolosita’ e qualche pioggia. Le temperature si sono mantenute sempre al di sotto dei 25 gradi e a meta’ mese abbiamo avuto un impulso freddo proveniente da nord che ha segnato 15/17 gradi sul termometro.  In pratica:  e’ stato un luglio piuttosto fresco,  nettamente al di sotto delle medie stagionali.

Guardando la carta del tempo,  e’ stato cosi’ per gran parte dell’Europa orientale,  mentre la parte occidentale del continente era nella morsa del caldo e del fuoco.

In Italia infatti il clima e’ stato caldo asfissiante per tutto il mese,  intervallato solo da brevi momenti in cui acquazzoni violenti portavano un leggero refrigerio.

Che peccato leggere degli incendi boschivi in Spagna,  Francia,  Italia,  Grecia e perfino in Canada!  E le persone che hanno perso le loro case… I boschi sono risorse preziose,  e non intendo da sfruttare materialmente,  ma risorse che permettono di abbassare le temperature dell’aria.  Si dovrebbero piantare alberi,  non tagliarli o bruciarli.

Purtroppo molti governi mondiali sono ciechi e sordi a questo argomento,  se non negazionisti.  Forse sperano che quest’anno sia un’eccezione e che il prossimo andra’ meglio.  Basta pero’ dare un’occhiata veloce alle statistiche per capire la realta’ della situazione.  Qualche politico ha affermato che dobbiamo adattarci:  ma le colture si adattano?  Gli animali preziosi come gli impollinatori si adattano?  I mari si adattano?  I giacciai si adattano? I boschi si adattano a non prendere fuoco col calore eccessivo? Dovremmo fare qualcosa subito,  non lasciare bruciare il pianeta!

Il cambiamento climatico viene sempre accantonato e non ci sono mai risorse per farvi fronte.  Questo e’ senz’altro un falso problema per i Paesi che hanno una accentuata evasione fiscale e che non fanno abbastanza per arginarla,  come l’Italia.

Adesso le giornate si sono accorciate un pochino.  Non c’e’ ancora una vera e propria notte,  ma verso mezzanotte- l’una,  il cielo e’ piu’ scuro.

Gli animali sono silenziosi e guardinghi durante l’estate,  poiche’ hanno i loro nuovi nati da far crescere al riparo dai predatori.  Proprio stamattina circolava nel nostro giardino un leprotto piccolino,  evidentemente nato a primavera.

Fra le notizie del mese,  devo raccontarvi che Somero e’ finita sui giornali nazionali e ai telegiornali,  poiche’ le piogge eccezionalmente violente di domenica 12 luglio hanno fatto collassare un tratto di strada in paese.  Si tratta di una strada centenaria:  la vecchia Turuntie che collega Somero a Turku;  non e’ ceduta perche’ centenaria,  ma per la quantita’ abnorme di acqua che vi e’ transitata in un condotto sottostante.  I lavori di ripristino sono durati una settimana.   Quel giorno nel nostro giardino sono caduti 40mm di pioggia.

Fra le altre notizie curiose,  parlando di parita’ di genere,  vi racconto che e’ stata approvata una legge che permette ai militari maschi di tenere i capelli lunghi,  visto che alle militaresse e’ permesso.  A condizione che vengano tenuti raccolti,  questo vale da sempre per maschi e femmine.

La collaborazione e “l’amicizia senza limiti” (come direbbe Putin) fra gli stati scandinavi,  si e’ estrinsecata il mese scorso anche con l’approvazione di norme che permettono alle rispettive polizie,  finlandese e svedese,  di attraversare il confine fra i due stati in caso debbano inseguire dei malviventi.

Adesso una curiosita’ che abbiamo visto al telegiornale e sui vari siti:  chi ha seguito le esequie di Ali Khamenei,  guida suprema dell’Iran,  avra’ frose notato che il feretro e’ stato trasportato su un camion refrigerante sul quale campeggiava una grossa “K”.  Ebbene,  il camion apparteneva alla catena finlandese di supermercati:  “K-supermarket”,  regolarmente venduto anni fa,  ma al quale nessuno aveva ancora staccato la copertura pubblicitaria.

Ascoltando la radio italiana,  sono venuta a conoscenza di una iniziativa per candidare l’isola italiana di Lampedusa al premio Nobel per la Pace.   Lampedusa e’ una piccola isola situata nel Canale di Sicilia,  molto vicina alle coste africane.  Lampedusa e’ luogo di approdo di moltissimi migranti che attraversano il Maditerraneo per giungere in Europa e i lampedusani forniscono la prima accoglienza,  quando non si occupano di inumare i cadaveri di chi non ce la fa.  Ora,  si puo’ pensare cio’ che si vuole a proposito del fenomeno migratorio,  ma e’ chiaro che la piccola Lampedusa ha grandi meriti in fatto di assistenza e cura del prossimo,  chiunque egli sia.  Per questo trovo giusta la candidatura di lampedusa al Nobel.  Invece,  ai “grandi” del mondo,  a coloro che ambiscono al Nobel o a passare alla storia come grandi conquistatori,  mi verrebbe da dire:  date meta’ del vostro patrimonio in beneficenza per la ricerca contro le malattie,  contro la crisi climatica,  contro l’analfabetismo,  la fame…

Infine,  una notizia che ci appassiona:  13 opere del famoro architetto finlandese Alvar Aalto hanno ricevuto il riconoscimento di “Patrimonio dell’Umanita’” dall’UNESCO.  Alvar Aalto e’ esponente dell’architettura organica e ha lasciato capolavori di architettura e design in molte citta’ della Finlandia,  ma anche in Italia.

A Month in my Photos.

July was extremely changeable in Finland.  We had sunny days alternating with periods of cloudiness and some rain.  Temperatures consistently remained below 25 degrees Celsius,  and midway through the month,  we had a cold wave from the north that brought temperatures to 15-17 degrees Celsius.  In short,  it was a rather cool July,  well below seasonal averages.

Looking at the weather map,  this was the case for much of Eastern Europe,  while the western part of the continent was gripped by the heat.

In Italy,  in fact,  the climate was stiflingly hot throughout the month,  punctuated only by brief periods of heavy showers that brought a slight refreshment.

What a shame to read about forest fires in Spain,  France,  Italy,  and Greece and even Canada!  And about the people who have lost their properties… Forests are precious resources,  and I don’t mean to be physically exploited,  but resources that allow us to lower air temperatures.  We should plant trees,  not cut them down or burn them.

Unfortunately,  many world governments are blind and deaf to this issue,  if not deniers.  Perhaps they hope this year will be an exception and that next year will be better.  However,  a quick glance at the statistics is enough to understand the reality of the situation.  Some politicians have claimed that we must adapt:  ​​but will crops adapt?  Will precious animals like pollinators adapt?  Will the seas adapt?  Will the glaciers adapt?  Will woodlands adapt and not go to fire when it’s hot?  We should do something now,  not let the planet burn!

Climate change is always overlooked and there are never the resources to address it.  This is undoubtedly a false problem for countries that have significant tax evasion and are not doing enough to curb it,  just as Italy.

The days have gotten a little shorter now.  There isn’t a real night yet,  but around midnight or one o’clock,  the sky is darker.

The animals are silent and wary during the summer,  as they have their newborns to raise away from predators.  Just this morning,  a tiny hare was running around our garden,  evidently born in spring.

Among the news of the month,  I must tell you that Somero has made national headlines and TV news,  because the exceptionally heavy rains of Sunday,  July 12th,  caused a section of the road in the town to collapse.  It’s a century-old road:  the old Turuntie,  which connects Somero to Turku.  It collapsed not because it’s a century-old road,  but because of the abnormal amount of water that passed through a conduit underneath.  The repair work lasted a week.  That day,  40mm rain fell in our garden.

Among other news,  speaking of gender equality,  I’ll tell you that a law has been passed allowing male soldiers to wear long hair,  whereas female soldiers are already allowed to do so.  As long as it’s tied back,  though.  This is the rule for both men and women.

The collaboration and “boundless friendship” (as Putin would say) between the Scandinavian states was also expressed last month with the approval of laws allowing their respective police forces,  Finnish and Swedish,  to cross the border between the two countries in case they need to chase criminals.

Now,  a fun fact we saw on the news and on various websites:  those who followed the funeral of Ali Khamenei,  Iran’s supreme leader,  may have noticed that the coffin was transported on a refrigerated truck bearing a large “K.”  Well,  the truck belonged to the Finnish supermarket chain:  “K-supermarket”,  which had been regularly sold years ago,  but from which the advertisement has not been removed.

Listening to the Italian radio,  I learned of an initiative to nominate the Italian island of Lampedusa for the Nobel Peace Prize.  Lampedusa is a small island located in the Strait of Sicily,  very close to the African coast.  Lampedusa is a landing place for many migrants crossing the Mediterranean to reach Europe,  and the Lampedusans provide the initial reception,  when they are not busy burying the bodies of those who do not make it.  Now,  you can think what you want about the migratory phenomenon,  but it is clear that little Lampedusa deserves great merit in terms of assistance and care for others,  whoever they may be.  This is why I think Lampedusa’s nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize is right.  Instead,  to the “big boys” of the world,  to those who aspire to the Nobel Prize or to go down in history as great conquerors,  I would say:  donate half your wealth to charity for research into disease,  the climate crisis,  illiteracy,  hunger…

Finally,  some exciting news:  13 works of the famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto have been recognized as “World Heritage” by UNESCO.  Alvar Aalto is an exponent of organic architecture and has left masterpieces of architecture and design in many cities in Finland,  as well as in Italy.
