Santa Eulalia e’ la Cattedrale di Barcellona,  che veramente si chiama:  Cattedrale della Santa Croce e Santa Eulalia,  o,  in catalano:  Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia.

La cattedrale sorge sulla parte piu’ elevata della citta’ vecchia ed e’ stata costruita tra il XIII e il XV  secolo.  Lo stile e’ gotico,  caratterizzato da pinnacoli e gargoyles,  con un portale importante decorato con numerosi bassorilievi e statue di angeli e santi.  La cattedrale e’ lunga 90 metri e alta 53.

La dedica a Santa Eulalia e’ doverosa,  poiche’ e’ la protettrice della citta’.  La Santa fu una martire romana.  Era una fanciulla devota che non rinnego’ la propria fede e fu imprigionata in una botte chiodata e fatta rotolare giu’ per una stradina del centro citta’.

Ma cio’ che voglio condividere con voi oggi e’ lo spettacolare chiostro della cattedrale.  Ha una pianta quadrangolare con un giardino di palme,  magnolie,  un arancio e una fontana.  Con grande meraviglia dei visitatori,  nel chiostro abitano permanentemente tredici oche bianche;  esse ricordano Santa Eulalia,  che aveva tredici anni quando venne martirizzata.

Saint Eulalia.

Saint Eulalia is the Cathedral of Barcelona, ​​ which is truly called:  Cathedral of the Holy Cross and Saint Eulalia,  or,  in Catalan:  Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia.

The cathedral stands on the highest part of the old city center and was built between the 13th and 15th centuries.  Its style is Gothic,  characterized by pinnacles and gargoyles,  with a prominent portal decorated with numerous bas-reliefs and statues of angels and saints.  The cathedral is 90 meters long and 53 meters high.

The dedication to Saint Eulalia is fitting,  as she is the city’s protector.  The saint was a Roman martyr.  She was a devout girl who did not renounce her faith and was imprisoned in a nailed barrel and rolled down a narrow street in the city center.

But what I want to share with you today is the cathedral’s spectacular cloister.  It has a quadrangular layout with a garden of palm trees,  magnolias,  an orange tree and a fountain.  To the amazement of visitors,  thirteen white geese permanently live in the cloister;  they commemorate Saint Eulalia,  who was thirteen years old when she was martyred.
