Un mese nelle mie foto.

Gennaio e’ stato pittosto freddo, con uno slancio iniziale di -20 gradi C da noi nella Finlandia meridionale ma con un record di -41 C in Lapponia, cioe’ nell’estremo noed del Paese.

Questo freddo intenso ha naturalmente messo in difficolta’ i trasporti, da quelle parti, specialmente il trasporto aereo, poiche’ non tutti gli aerei possono operare a quelle temperature; di conseguenza molti voli sono stati cancellati o ritardati. Purtroppo eravamo nel bel mezzo della stagione turistica natalizia e gli aeroporti della Lapponia erano pieni di turisti che vi bivaccavano. Al netto delle proteste dei turisti, va detto che la cancellazione dei voli e le riprotezioni, cosi’ come l’offrire un pasto extra, dipendono interamente dalla compagnia aerea. L’aeroporto non puo’ decidere nulla, poiche’ e’ la compagnia aerea che deve pagare i servizi. La compagnia aerea, con la quale il turista fa un contratto nel momento in cui compra il biglietto, ha anche la responsabilita’ di pagare gli aeroporti: il rifornimento di carburante, il trattamento dei passeggeri, i bus utilizzati, insomma…tutto. Infine, una nota di realismo: se il turista decide di volare con una compagnia Low-cost, deve sapere gia’ da subito che alcuni servizi non gli verranno corrisposti; chi compra un biglietto a 9euro, non si aspetti di essere servito come chi vola a 200euro.

I trasporti ferroviari invece hanno avuto pochissimi inconvenienti; addirittura nell’anno 2025 ben l’89% dei treni in Finlandia hanno viaggiato in orario.

Anche in Italia gennaio e’ stato freddo: a Verona addirittura -6 gradi C ed e’ durato per diversi giorni. A meta’ mese il ciclone Harry ha portato venti e piogge causando danni enormi alle coste dell’Italia meridionale.

Adesso le giornate si sono allungate gia’ un po, adesso che siamo gia’ lontani oltre un mese dal giorno del Solstizio.

Nel nostro giardino quest’inverno abbiamo visto i soliti uccelli stanziali: Cince, Ciuffolotti, Codibugnoli, Passeri e qualche coppia di Merli, che chissa’ perche’ non sono migrati! Non e’ migrato nemmeno lo Sparviero, che anche questo mese ha mietuto vittime fra i suddetti uccellini, ma d’altronde deve mangiare anche lui.

Cari lettori del mio blog, se ci eravamo augurati un anno nuovo ricco di serenita’ e di pace, ebbene: possiamo scordarcelo. Ci ha pensato il super-bullo americano a farcelo sapere. D’altra parte, quando il tuo alleato storico si mette a flirtare con il tuo nemico e ti minaccia e ti insulta, ti impone dazi e ti tratta da suddito e ultimamente offende i caduti europei…non e’ un bel momento. Probabilmente tutto questo passera’, anzi sta gia’ passando: il gradimento degli elettori e’ al minimo, ma speriamo che questo presidente “stanco, confuso, forse malato” sia messo in minoranza gia’ il prossimo novembre, anche perché sta avendo grossi problemi anche interni. Nessun Paese Scandinavo ha accettato di entrare nel ‘Board of Peace’.

Intanto Putin continua a bombardare obiettivi civili, anche durante i “colloqui di pace”, proprio come faceva nel 2022, quando gli incontri avvenivano in Turchia. Allora era sicuro di vincere, adesso, dopo 4 anni e migliaia di morti, sta aspettando che Trump lo cavi d’impaccio, poiche’ la vittoria e’ lontana e tutto cio’ che proclama e’ solo propaganda.

Altre notizie in pillole: nelle carceri finlandesi ci sono al momento circa 3600 detenuti.

Nel piu’ grande parco eolico della Finlandia, a Lestijärvi, ci sono 69 pale.

Nel 2024 in Finlandia la popolazione over 65 era il 23,6% del totale.

7,5 milioni invece e’ la massa di viaggiatori che si spostano tra Helsinki e Tallinn annualmente.

January was quite cold, with an initial temperature of -20 degrees Celsius in southern Finland but a record low of -41 degrees Celsius in Lapland, the far north of the country.

This intense cold naturally hindered transportation in those lands, especially air travel, as not all planes can operate at those temperatures; as a result, many flights were cancelled or delayed. Unfortunately, it was just in the middle of the Christmas tourist season, and Lapland’s airports were full of rerouted tourists. Despite the tourists’ protests, it must be said that flight cancellations and rerouting, as well as offering an extra meal, depend entirely on the airline. The airport cannot decide anything, since it is the airline that has to pay for the services. The airline, with which the tourist enters into a contract when purchasing the ticket, is also responsible for paying the airports handling: fuel, passenger treatment, buses used, in short… everything. Finally, a note of realism: if a tourist decides to fly with a low-cost airline, he or she must know from the start that certain services will not be paid for; someone who buys a 9 euro ticket should not expect to be served the same as someone flying for 200 euros.

Railways, on the other hand, had very few problems; in fact, in 2025, 89% of trains in Finland ran on time.

January was also cold in Italy: in Verona, it reached -6 degrees Celsius and lasted for several days. In the middle of the month, Cyclone Harry brought winds and rain, causing enormous damage to the coasts of southern Italy.

Now the days are getting a bit longer, now that we’re more than a month away from the Solstice.

In our garden this winter we’ve seen the usual resident birds: Tits, Bullfinches, Long-tailed tits, Sparrows and a few pairs of Blackbirds, who knows why they haven’t migrated! The Sparrowhawk, which also claimed victims among the aforementioned birds this month, hasn’t migrated either, but then again, it has to eat too.

Dear readers of my blog, if we were hoping for a new year filled with serenity and peace, well: we can forget about it. The American super-bully has warned us. On the other hand, when your historic ally starts flirting with your enemy and threatens and insults you, puts tariffs on your products and treats you as a vassal and lately rven offended European fallen soldiers… it’s not a good time. Probably all this will pass, in fact it is already passing: his voter approval ratings are at rock bottom, but let’s hope that this “tired, confused, perhaps sick” president is outvoted as early as next November, also because he is doing so bad in internal affairs too. (The words in quotation marks are not mine, but belong to the clever journalist Anne Applebaum.)

Meanwhile Putin continues to bomb civilian targets, even during “peace talks,” just as he did in 2022, when the meetings took place in Turkey. Then he was sure of victory, now, after four years and thousands of deaths, he is waiting for Trump to get him out of trouble, because victory is far away and what he claims is all just propaganda.
