Tra Italia e Finlandia

Un mese nelle mie foto.

Maggio e’ stato piu’ fresco e perturbato della media stagionale,  in Finlandia.  Abbiamo avuto si’ giorni belli e soleggiati,  ma abbiamo anche avuto giorni molto ventosi,  con cieli scorbutici,  brezze insistenti,  impulsi freddi,  raffiche notevoli e gran stormir di fronde.  Pioggia pero’ ne abbiamo avuta poca,  in compenso abbiamo udito i primi tuoni,  decisamente fuori stagione.

In Italia maggio e’ stato altrettanto perturbato,  malmostoso.  La pioggia a volte insistente e’ stato il leitmotiv del mese.

In Finlandia a maggio si approfitta per sistemare i giardini e gli orti.  La terra non e’ ancora pronta ad accogliere le sementi prima di adesso,  poiche’ e’ ancora troppo fredda.  Anche noi abbiamo seminato a meta’ mese le verdure dell’orto che ci interessano:  insalata,  rucola,  spinaci,  aneto e carote e infine abbiamo piantato le patate.  Fra le altre verdure che si possono produrre negli orti anche qui in Finlandia meridionale ci sono per esempio pomodori,  rape,  zucchine,  alcuni tipi di zucche…ma e’ necessario coltivarle in serra.

E’ perfino divertente vedere con quale velocita’ gli alberi si stanno rivestendo di foglie e con quale impeto l’erba cresce nei prati…proprio a vista d’occhio.  Di giorno in giorno si vedono le differenze:  adesso e’ tutto un verde tenero,  fresco,  dolce.

Le giornate sono gia’ lunghissime:  adesso a mezzanotte e’ ancora chiaro e non e’ piu’ tempo di osservare le stelle o l’aurora boreale.

Gli uccelli migratori adesso sono arrivati tutti,  anche quelli che si cibano di insetti,  poiche’ questi ultimi stanno gia’ svolazzando.  Fra gli ultimi arrivati:  il cuculo.   Adesso e’ un gran susseguirsi di concerti,  dalla mattina presto a sera tardi.  Fra i cantanti migliori senz’altro i merli e i tordi.

Le prime farfalle hanno gia’ sfarfallato,  quindi ci stiamo dirigendo proprio verso l’estate.

A proposito di cantanti (che non saranno mai cosi’ bravi come i piccoli uccellini,  spiacente per loro!)  i finlandesi seguono con piacere l’Eurovision Song Contest,   che quest’anno ha visto esibirsi ben due conterranei che a loro modo hanno fatto la storia della competizione:  Erika Vikman,  che si e’ piazzata undicesima e la band KAJ,  piazzati quarti.   I KAJ sono finlandesi di Vöyri,  una localita’ sulla costa ovest in area bilingue finno-svedese e hanno rappresentato la Svezia:  cosa significa avere rapporti di buon vicinato! 😉

Le stragi intanto continuano:  quella a Gaza e quella in Ucraina,  sempre sulla pelle della povera gente.  Se Trump pensava di poter risolvere la contesa ucraina in 24 ore contando sul buon viso di Putin (o sull’amicizia o su un favore personale),  si sbagliava di grosso.  Com’era prevedibile,  il titolare del Cremlino sta solo prendendo in giro tutti.  Ma,  cari russi,  io mi chiedo:  non sarebbe ora di destituire un presidente che ha portato il vostro Paese in una guerra inutile,  nella quale in tre anni e’ riuscito a conquistare solo un misero 8% del territorio ucraino al prezzo di migliaia di morti?  Non sarebbe ora di mandarlo in pensione (o in galera) e ricominciare a vivere in pace con i vostri confinanti e con l’Europa intera?

Alla luce della cattiva volonta’ della Russia,  dei suoi tentativi di destabilizzazione,  della guerra ibrida portata avanti in continuazione,  la Finlandia come gli altri stati Baltici stanno avviando la procedura per uscire dalla Convenzione di Ottawa sulle mine anti-uomo e anti-carro.  Un passo che la dice lunga:  nessuno di questi Paesi e’ guerrafondaio,  nessuno cerca lo scontro,  ma il confine minato,  come deterrente,  adesso si ritiene purtroppo necessario.  Ricordo a tutti che la Finlandia e’ stata per 108 anni neutrale e ben attenta al dialogo con la Russia e che queste misure costano,  ma sperare nella buona stella non e’ piu’ sufficiente.

Il gossip del mese ci dà l’attore Tom Cruise in visita in Finlandia per acquistare uno yacht prodotto dall’azienda finlandese Nautor Swan nei cantieri di Pietarsaari.  La Nautor Swan è specializzata in velieri super-lusso;  fondata nel 1966,  nel 2024 è stata acquisita per metà dal gruppo italiano Sanlorenzo.

Altre notizie spicciole:  la Finlandia ha prodotto nell’anno 2024 circa 500mila tonnellate di rifiuti.

In Europa nel 2024 si sono avuti 35mila casi di morbillo;  lo stato con numero di casi maggiore e’ stata la Romania.

80 milioni l’anno sono i polli allevati in Finlandia.

Le allergie primaverili in Finlandia sono per lo piu’ causate da betulle e fieno;  ne soffre il 10-20% della popolazione.

il 60% degli alberi tagliati in Finlandia va in produzione di energia elettrica e teleriscaldamento.  soprattutti gli alberi giovani,  che vengono tagliati per sfoltire le foreste.

A Month in my Photos.

May was cooler and more disturbed than the seasonal average,  in Finland.  We had beautiful and sunny days,  but we also had very windy days,  with surly skies,  insistent breezes,  cold impulses,  notable gusts and a lot of rustling of leaves.  Although we had little rain,  we heard the first thunder,  definitely out of season. 

In Italy,  May was equally disturbed,  sullen.  The sometimes persistent rain was the leitmotif of the month.  

In Finland,  May is spent tiding up the gardens and vegetable gardens.  The earth has not yet been ready to receive seeds until now,  because it is still too cold.  We also sowed the garden vegetables that we like in the middle of the month:  lettuce,  rocket,  spinach,  dill and carrots and finally we planted the potatoes.  Among other vegetables that can be grown in gardens here in southern Finland are tomatoes,  turnips,  courgettes,  and some types of pumpkins…but they need to be grown in greenhouses. 

It’s terrific to see how quickly the trees are putting on leaves and how vigorously the grass is growing in the meadows…just before your eyes.  Day by day you can see the differences:  now everywhere you see a soft,  fresh,  sweet green. 

The bright hours are already numerous:  now at midnight it’s still bright and it’s no longer time to observe the stars or the Northern Lights.

The migratory birds have all arrived now,  even those that feed on insects,  since the latter are already flying around.  Among the latest arrivals:  the Cuckoo.  Now there is a lovely succession of concerts,  from early morning until late at night.  Among the best singers are undoubtedly the Blackbirds and the Thrushes. 

The first butterflies have already emerged,  so we are heading right into summer.

Speaking of singers (who will never be as good as the little birds,  sorry!) the Finns are happy to follow the Eurovision Song Contest,  which this year saw the performance of two Finnish participants:  Erika Vikman,  who placed eleventh,  and the band KAJ,  who placed fourth.  A new thing in this festival.  KAJ are Finns from Vöyri,  a town on the west coast in the bilingual Finnish-Swedish area and they represented Sweden:  this means having a good neighborly relationship!  😉

Meanwhile massacres continue:  the extermination in Gaza and the one in Ukraine,  always at the expense of the poor people.  If Trump thought he could resolve the Ukrainian dispute in 24 hours by counting on Putin’s good face,  he was very wrong.  As was to be expected,  the Kremlin dweller is just making fun of everyone.  Dear Russians,  I ask myself:  isn’t it time to remove a president who led your country into a useless war,  in which in three years he managed to conquer only a miserable 8% of the Ukrainian territory at the cost of thousands deaths?  Isn’t it time to send him to retirement (or jail) and start living in peace with your neighbors and with Europe as a whole?

After Russia’s bad will,  its attempts at destabilization and the hybrid warfare it continues to wage,  Finland,  like the other Baltic states,  is starting the process of withdrawing from the Ottawa Convention on anti-personnel and anti-tank mines.  A step that tells a lot:  none of these countries are warmongers,  none are seeking conflict,  but the mined border,  as a deterrent,  is now unfortunately considered necessary.  I remind everyone that Finland has been neutral for 108 years and very attentive to dialogue with Russia and that these measures cost money,  but hoping for good luck is no longer enough.

This month’s gossip reports actor Tom Cruise visiting Finland to purchase a yacht produced by the Finnish company Nautor Swan at the Pietarsaari shipyards.  Nautor Swan specializes in super-luxury sailboats;  founded in 1966,  it was half-acquired by the Italian group Sanlorenzo in 2024.

More small news:  Finland produced about 500 thousand tons of waste in 2024.

In Europe there were 35 thousand cases of measles in 2024;  the country with the highest number of cases was Romania.

80 million chickens are raised in Finland every year.

Spring allergies in Finland are mostly caused by birch trees and hay;  10-20% of the population suffers from them.

60% of the trees cut down in Finland go into electricity and district heating.  Especially young trees,  which are cut down to thin out the forests.
