Tra Italia e Finlandia

Siamo a bordo del secondo volo.  Tutto e’ pronto per la partenza.  Manca solo la necessaria procedura di sghiacciamento dell’aeromobile,  che e’ stato all’addiaccio tutta la notte.

Il comandante fa la messa in moto,  si allontana dal finger e lentamente si dirige alla postazione preposta,  dove gli addetti ci spruzzano di glicole.  Cosi’,  belli lavati,  ci rechiamo in pista per il decollo.

Il volo da Monaco a Helsinki dura poco piu’ di due ore e sorvola una buona parte dell’Europa centrale.  Sopra le nuvole,  ad una altitudine di 10.000 piedi,  c’e’ sempre il sole,  che entra dai finestrini e riscalda i visi dei passeggeri ancora assonnati.

Oggi tutta l’Europa e’ soleggiata e si vede molto bene.  Sono le 9.30 e sotto di noi le citta’ si stanno animando:  c’e’ chi corre in auto,  a piedi,  in treno,  ma noi superiamo tutti in velocita’.

Man mano che ci avviciniamo alla Scandinavia e al mar Baltico,  mi sorprendo ad osservare tutto il ghiaccio che lo ricopre.  Anzi,  riesco a fotografare alcune crepe davvero impressionanti.  Il ghiaccio e’ materia “viva”:  si sposta,  cambia aspetto,  ha persino una sua voce.

Siamo nella fase di avvicinamento a Helsinki.  La hostess gentilmente ci ricorda che la Finlandia ha un’ora in piu’ rispetto all’Europa centrale;  siamo molto ad est,  sul fuso orario della Grecia.  Chi ancora non lo ha fatto,  regola il proprio orologio.

From VRN to HEL via MUC  #2.

We are on board the second flight.  Everything is ready for departure.  What is missing is the necessary de-icing procedure for the aircraft,  which was in the open all night.  The captain starts the engine,  moves away from the loading bridge and slowly heads to the designated station,  where the workers spray us all over with glycol.  So,  well washed,  we go to the runway for take-off.

The flight from Munich to Helsinki lasts just over two hours and flies over a good part of Central Europe.  Above the clouds,  at an altitude of 10,000 feet,  the sun is always shining.  It shines through the windows and warms the faces of the still sleepy passengers. 

Actually,  today all of Europe is sunny and you can see very well.  It’s 9.30 a.m. and below us the cities are coming alive:  some people are busily running by car,  on foot,  by train,  but we outrun everyone.

As we get closer to Scandinavia and the Baltic Sea,  I get surprised by looking at all the ice that covers it.  I manage to photograph some truly impressive cracks.  Ice is “living” matter:  it moves,  it changes appearance,  it even has its own voice.

We are approaching Helsinki.  The flight attendant kindly reminds us that in Finland there is one hour’s difference from Central European time;  we are quite east,  on the Greek time zone.  Those who haven’t done so yet,  set their own watch.
