Cari lettori,  oggi vi propongo un post che amera’ chi fra voi e’ appassionato di linguistica,  linguaggio o lingue straniere.

I grafici e gli art directors della McDonald in occasione delle Olimpiadi hanno lanciato la pubblicita’ che vedete nella foto.  Tutto bene…lo slogan e’ molto inclusivo,  dice “Venite come siete”…lo hanno scritto in varie lingue…pero’…c’e’ un pero’…

Come vedete in praticamente tutte le lingue Europee,  la parola Cheeseburger si scrive nella stessa maniera,  tranne in finlandese,  dove diventa:  Juustohampurilainen,  come scritto nell’ultima riga.  IL problema e’ l’articolo, che nella lingua finlandese non esiste!  In finnico non ci sono articoli e non ci sono preposizioni,  per cui non occorre dire:  “Un Cheeseburger” ma solo:  “Juustohampurilainen”;  se se ne ordina piu’ di uno ovviamente si usa il numerale due…tre…

L’errore e’ grossolano e balza agli occhi subito a chi pratica la lingua finlandese e persino a chi la pratica male come me.  Chissa’ poi perche’ hanno deciso di anteporre alla parola Juustohampurilainen proprio l’articolo inglese:  “A”,  visto che siamo in Francia…

Per finire,  la pronuncia corretta:  “Juustohampurilainen” si pronuncia facendo cadere l’accento sulla prima “a” e facendo sentire la doppia “u” e pure la “h” aspirata.  La “J” iniziale si pronuncia “i” –  (ˈjuːstoˌhɑmpurilɑi̯nen).

Naturalmente “Juusto” e’ il formaggio e “Hampurilainen” e’ l’abitante di Amburgo.

Dear readers,  today’s post will appeal to those of you who are passionate about linguistics,  language or foreign languages.

McDonald’s graphic designers and art directors launched the advertisement you see in the photo for the Olympics.  Very nice… the slogan is very inclusive,  it says “Come as you are”… they wrote it in various languages… but… there is a mistake…

As you can see in practically all European languages,  the word Cheeseburger is written the same way,  except in Finnish,  where it becomes:  Juustohampurilainen,  as written in the last line.  The problem is the article,  which does not exist in Finnish!  In Finnish there are no articles and no prepositions,  so you don’t need to say: “A Cheeseburger” but only:  “Juustohampurilainen”;  if you order more than one,  obviously you use the numeral two…three…

The mistake is gross and is immediately obvious to those who practice Finnish and even to those who practice it badly as I do.  Who knows then why they decided to put the English article “A” before the word Juustohampurilainen,  since we are in France…

Finally,  the correct pronunciation: “Juustohampurilainen” is pronounced by dropping the accent on the first “a” and making the double “u” and also the aspirated “h” clearly heard.  The initial “J” is pronounced “i” –  (ˈjuːstoˌhɑmpurilɑi̯nen).

Of course “Juusto” is cheese and “Hampurilainen” is the inhabitant of Hamburg.

  3. My guess (FWIW) is that the designer didn’t like the idea of having nothing before “cheeseburger” in the last line, so (s)he put there the first thing which came to his/her mind.
    BTW, there are not articles in Polish either, and we write/speak Polish not feeling any poorer for it.
