Uno dei piaceri piu’ immensi che il mese di luglio ci regala e’ la maturazione delle fragole.  Frutti meravigliosi e dolcissimi,  le fragole mi sono personalmente molto gradite.  Nel nostro orto ne abbiamo ben sei file,  che coltiviamo con amorevole cura.

Maturano a luglio,  qui al nord,  mentre in Italia maturano a maggio,  ma come forse ormai sapete,  qui la terra a maggio e’ ancora parzialmente gelata.  Le fragole comunque sopravvivono benone sotto la neve invernale e non hanno bisogno di fertilizzanti particolari o antiparassitari.  Almeno non qui in Finlandia.

Diro’ di piu’:  da qualche stagione,  in un angolino del nostro giardino sono nate spontaneamente alcune piantine di fragoline di bosco.  Risto le ha trapiantate,  curate,  vezzeggiate e coccolate e loro si sono moltiplicate,  cosi’ adesso mangiamo anche fragoline di bosco in luglio.

Per la cronaca,  le nostre fragole fanno la seguente fine:  nell’insalata,  sul gelato,  nella macedonia,  trasformate in marmellata.

July Pleasures.

One of the greatest pleasures that the month of July gives us is the ripening of strawberries.  Wonderful and very sweet fruits,  I personally like strawberries very much.  In our garden we have six rows of them,  which we cultivate with loving care. 

They ripen in July,  here in the north,  while in Italy they ripen in May,  but as you may know by now,  here the land is still partially frozen in May.  However,  strawberries survive well under the winter snow and do not need special fertilizers or pesticides.  At least not here in Finland.

I will say more:  since a few seasons,  some wild strawberry plants have spontaneously grown in a small corner of our garden.  Risto transplanted them,  cared for them,  petted them and cuddled them and they multiplied,  so now we also eat wild strawberries in July.

Just for you to know,  our strawberries end up in the following way:  in the salad,  on ice cream,  in fruit salad,  turned into jam.

  16. How wonderful that you have them in your garden, strawberries are heavenly. When I was pregnant with my son I would pick baskets up at the store, one would be empty when I made it to the cashier. My son was born with a red birthmark shaped like a strawberry. 🙂

  18. Reading about your strawberries is such a delight! I love strawberries too, especially wild ones. It’s amazing how well they grow in Finland despite the cold. You’ve inspired me to try them in salads.
