Relandersgrund.

The former lightvessel  Relandersgrund has remained anchored for many years now in the elegant port of Katajanokka,  in the center of Helsinki.  To be precise,  the Relandersgrund is the oldest lightship in Finland,  built in 1888.  She is nowadays a café and elegant restaurant with terrace.

It has had an adventurous history:  after many years-activity in the open sea,  during First World War some Russian revolutionaries took possession of it with a hijacking and sank it.  At the end of the war the Finns recovered her but as she was in too bad conditions,  she could not fully return to service,  so she was assigned to sea survey.

In recent decades the Relandersgrund has become a tourist attraction and an elegant place to have lunch,  but also where to organize get-togethers,  parties and even weddings.

The function of a lightvessel is to replace a lighthouse in the open sea or in waters too deep for one to be built.  Lightships are usually red,  equipped with a large light array and a powerful siren.  They have a minimum crew on board.  Nowadays many of these types of ships have been replaced with modern technologies.

  1. It seems to me a miracle that this ship managed to be put back into service after it was sunk. It is already a very beautiful ship and the destination it has now been given will attract many tourists. We also once had 3 “light scoops” that functioned as a sailing lighthouse for years: the “Westhinder-1, -2 and -3)”. They were also used as observation ships. The lightvessels were withdrawn from service in 1994 and replaced by cheaper electronic light platforms. The Westhinder 1 has been moored on the Scheldt in Rupelmonde (Kruibeke) since 2002. It was converted into a multifunctional maritime visitors center.
